Lena laughed. “I don’t recall. Kids were never my thing.”
“She’s no longer a child.”
The waitress arrived, plates in hand. Two servings of seared ahi tuna salad with slivered peanuts were placed before us. “More coffee, sir?”
“Yes, and” —I opened my eyes wide— “does the lady need another martini?”
“I’m fine with my water. I need to pace myself. Tonight is New Year’s Eve.”
Once we were alone, I looked at our meals. “It’s fortunate that neither of us is allergic to peanuts or seafood.”
“We aren’t. I’m most positive I know all your secrets.”
“And I yours.” I took a bite. “This is good.”
“For what you’re paying, it should be.”
I scoffed and told Lena what was on my mind. “I can’t find Phillip.”
“Maybe he’s lost like you were.”
“I’m serious, Lena. He’s called Connie multiple times, yelling at her and demanding to talk to me or Julia and now he’s MIA.”
“All I know is that he’d been in contact with Logan or vice versa.”
“What about Brooklyn?”
Lena laid her fork down and exhaled. “Van, you agreed...”
My voice lowered to a whispered growl. “I’m not fucking near her. I want to know that she’s all right.”
“She’s staying with Olivia. I only know that because I received postal notice that Brooklyn’s gift was forwarded. The address where it was sent is your sister’s.”
