I nod. ”I had to pay Miller back for his half when we broke up so that I could use it.”

“Seriously? He looks like the kind of guy who wouldn’t miss a few hundred dollars.”

“I insisted.” Just like I insisted on paying for half the trip in the first place. “I wasn’t interested in Miller’s money and I wanted him to know that.”

“And I’m guessing your former BFF isn’t a trust fund baby like he is.”

“No. Janine is definitely interested in Miller’s money. And we were never BFFs. She was more of an acquaintance, the friend of a friend.”

“And what does that friend think of what happened?”

I smile. “Jen and Cassie have my back. Jen told Janine that she better make this hookup work out because she wouldn’t have any friends to fall back on. They knew what she was like, but even they didn’t see this coming. Besides, she could offer herself up naked on a plate, but that doesn’t mean Miller had to take her up on the offer.”

“Naked on a plate?” Nash chuckles.

“You know what I mean.”

“Can’t say that I do. That’s really hard to picture. How big is this plate, exactly?”

I huff out a laugh as I shove Nash with my shoulder. When I lift my gaze, I see Janine is watching us. Miller’s fast asleep, his seat reclined, giving her an uninhibited view of me and Nash.

Nash does that thing again, where he turns my face toward his with just the tip of his finger. His grey eyes swirl with sympathy.

“They don’t matter. Neither of them matter. What they think doesn’t matter.”

I give him a smirk. “If that’s true, then why are we pretending to be together?”

He runs the tip of his thumb along my lower lip. The move is so tender, so intimate, it makes me shiver. My blood thumps in my ears and between my legs.

“Maybe I should have said that their opinion of you doesn’t matter. I think it’s fine to let them believe that you’ve moved on.”

“With you?”

“Why not me?”

I lower my gaze, but Nash curls his finger under my chin and lifts my face until I look at him again. “Am I too old for you?”

I shake my head a little, as much as I can with him holding my chin. “You’re so far out of my league, I’m surprised they believed we could be together.”

“If that were true, I don’t think I’d have to hold myself back from kissing you again.”

“But you’re able to hold yourself back and I don’t want you to.”

“Luna.”

My name is a whispered groan. I search his eyes for any sign of what he’s thinking. Is he frustrated with me?

“Don’t feel sorry for me,” I say.

He shakes his head. “That’s not what I’m feeling for you at all. But you were saving yourself for that guy. Just because he isn’t the one doesn’t mean you should go out and give your virginity to the next guy you’re attracted to.”

A million different emotions bombard me in that moment, humiliation, pride, shame, surprise. The one that bubbles to the surface seems to be hysteria, because I start to laugh.

“What’s so funny?”

I pause for a moment, wondering just how honest I should be. “If I had my pick of the two of you, If I’d known you were even an option, I never would have gone out with Miller.”

“You’re making it impossible for me to do the honorable thing.”
