Page 2 of Heart

“That’s right, baby brother. Need to take care of business at home before I leave.” He pulls Sarah into his arms, holding her tight to his chest, kissing her on the forehead. “Wouldn’t want anyone stealing my girl while I’m away, now would we?”

I feel like I’m about to hurl. I want to storm out of this bar and get away. Instead, I congratulate them both and buy them another round of drinks. Tomorrow can’t come soon enough. I need to leave this crappy town and never look back.

Kelly stalks toward me, her tits half out of her shirt; wearing what she thinks is a seductive smile. “Hey, Luke.” She drawls, waving a bottle of whiskey in front of me. She motions to refill my glass and I quickly wave her off. I just want to be left alone, stew in this corner, with my feet up on the empty barstool.

“How’s that momma and daddy of yours? Still drunk?” she drones in her usual sour tone. I'm not sure if she's trying to be funny, or she’s still a bitch like she was back in high school.

“They're just great. I’ll tell them you said hi. Nice talking to you, Kelly,” I say, before grabbing my glass in a huff and moving to one of the empty tables at the other side of the bar.

I don’t feel like mingling with anyone tonight. All I can think about is how many hours until I’m out of this damn town, so I can start my new life. I’ve always felt like an outsider here in Jackson, judged because of my last name, condemned just because I was born into a shitty family.

Both my parents are alcoholics—my father the happy drunk, my mother, the abusive one. Mom always let my brother and I know how much she wished we were never born, whether it was with her cruel words or her iron fists, and Dad was always too drunk to care.Just your typical dysfunctional family.

The entire town puts me in the same category as my lying, cheating, douchebag brother, but I’m nothing like him. My reputation suffers by association, but I’m working hard to make something of myself. I completed four years of college at the local state university, and now I’m off to medical school, to prove them all wrong.

“Hey, crabby, I think we’re boring you tonight.” Sarah eases up next to me and takes a seat.

“You’re not. Just everyone else is,” I mutter, watching the flush creep up on her face.

“Have you seen Ben? I haven’t seen him for a while now, and he’s pretty lit.” She frowns.

“I haven’t, but I’ll keep my eye out.”

“Why don’t you come play pool with us?” she asks, painting a ray of sunshine when she smiles at me.

“Nah...you go on. I’ll keep an eye out for Ben.”

“I’m gonna miss you.”

“I’m gonna miss you too, Sarah.”You have no idea how much.

Every so often I catch Sarah eyeing me from across the room and wonder if she’s thinking about me too. I always like to imagine that she feels the same way I do, but I know it’s nothing but a fantasy. Everyone around me is having a good time, shooting pool, playing darts, and line dancing, while I sit here torturing myself, watching the girl of my dreams, the way her sinful body sways to the music. When she glances in my direction, our eyes connect, and it feels like it’s just her and me in the room.

My brother is wasted, busy flirting with other girls when Sarah isn't looking, and I just want to get up and punch him in the face for the way he makes her feel. Can’t he see what a precious gift she is?

The more I sit and fume, the more the rage flames inside. And the more I sit and watch Sarah, the harder my dick gets. She’s bent over the pool table, and my thoughts begin to grow wild.

I’d run my hands over that sexy, hot ass of hers, as she wraps her long, smooth legs around my waist, bringing us closer together. I’d slide my thick cock inside her tight hot…

I scrub my hands over my face. I need to get the fuck out of here before I drive myself insane. I jump off the barstool and make my way down the musty corridor to the bathroom, needing to relieve myself before I sneak out.

A loud crash comes from the supply closet before I have a chance to push the bathroom door open, so I decide to check it out. I swing the door open, livid at the display. Ben is in a lip-lock with Kelly, his hands roaming across her naked breasts. They both startle and break apart at the sight of me. Kelly’s arms fly over her chest in embarrassment, and my brother smirks like a villain.

I turn and storm away, but Ben is hot on my heels. I’m surprised he can even walk straight. I race through the bar as quickly as possible, avoiding eye contact with anyone. I need to make it to the parking lot before anyone stops me, because at this moment I think I could be capable of murder.

“Luke!” my brother shouts, as I fumble with the keys, trying to get them in the door of my beat up Ford pickup truck as quickly as possible.Apparently not quick enough.

“Luke, wait up, man.”

“Not now, Ben, you need to go home, preferably with your fiancée.”

“You’re not gonna say anything to Sarah, right?” He places his hand on my shoulder, trying to stop me from getting into the truck, and I break.

I hear the sound of my knuckles crack when my fist slams his jaw, just before his ass hits the ground. Pain radiates through my hand, and up my arm, but I ignore it. I’ve never punched anyone before, and I’m glad my asshole brother is the first recipient.

“Fuck, man. What the hell?” The idiot just sits on the ground stunned, rubbing his jaw, and laughing.

“You deserved that, dick.”
