He’s hardly ever home. I don’t see him much at all. I never have, actually. He’s always been so busy.
But when he is home, he makes me the center of his universe. He’s the perfect loving father when he’s around. I just can’t believe the man who’s spoiled me all my life could be wrapped up in something so heinous.
But if he’s not, why would Gage hate him so much?
Gage’s eyes soften with pity as he watches the thoughts race across my face, and that’s when I know.
I know it’s all true. He wouldn’t be looking down at me with such compassion and regret if everything he’d just revealed was a lie.
I feel my heart crack open as my world falls apart.
“Ava,” Gage begins, but I rush past him and barricade myself in the bathroom.
His bedroom might not have a lock on it, but his bathroom does, and I turn it, firmly locking out the man who single-handedly destroyed all my illusions with one sentence.
He’s a fucking human trafficker.
