“Awww, Daddy!” the girls complained.
I was tired but felt the same way they felt, I didn’t want the day to end.
“We will come back soon,” Morris said to comfort the girls.
“Can I ride with Ms. Cam?” Skye asked.
“You don’t even know if Ms. Cam is going home,” Morris started.
“It’s fine. I’m going home. She can ride with me.”
“Okay, best behavior,” Morris instructed.
“Yes, sir,” Skye smiled.
We walked back to the garage. Morris opened the door and helped Skye into her seatbelt.
“I’m sorry,” he said after he closed the door. “You don’t have to do this.”
“I don’t mind at all. I need the company anyway.”
I followed Morris out the garage and onto the highway.
“Ms. Cam,” Skye said.
“What’s up?”
“Thank you for doing my hair,” She said.
“I was my pleasure.”
“My mommy used to do my hair, but she hasn’t been around. I don’t know where she is, but she still loves us even though she hasn’t been around. My daddy told us she does.”
I looked at her and then back at the road.
“I’m sure she loves you with the weight of one thousand elephants. Sometimes grownups have things they have to figure out, which may take them away for a while. I’m sure she misses you very much.”
Skye started to cry.
“Why won’t she come around and get us and comb our hair if she loves us?”
“Sweetie, I don’t know, but what I know for sure is that your daddy will do his best to take care of you, and I will be around too if you get sad and need to talk, okay?”
“Okay,” she said and looked out the window.
I had no idea what was going on with their mother, but she obviously needed her ass whooped. There was no way she shouldn’t be around for her daughters if she could be.
We arrived at our complex and walked to our building together.
“Thanks for riding with me and keeping me company, Skye.”
“You’re welcome. Thank you for doing my hair, Ms. Cam. Good night,” Skye said and gave me a hug.
“You are very welcome,” I responded.
“Thank you for doing my hair and not hurting me,” Fee said.
“You are welcome, Fee. You did a great job holding still for me. Thank you.”
