Maybe. But better than the overkill of multiple listening devices hidden in her accessories.
“It cannot be helped,” he said, a shrug in his tone.
It took her a second to remember what he was talking about. Oh, yes, responding to her question.
“Why are you doing this?” she asked, needing him to tell her again.
Maybe it would make more sense the second time around.
“I told you.”
“We aren’t done yet.” He meant sex. “You are going on vacation, at the last minute, you, just so you can get more sex?”
“Not vacation exactly.”
“What then?”
“I will have to work part of each day, and since I am there, I will move forward meetings that were to be scheduled with other companies for next month.”
“Can they be moved?” Just because he wanted to change his travel schedule?
“It would be the best interest of the companies to do so.”
“Mirrus isn’t a major world power.”
“No, it is a small island country with some very important natural resources. Mirrus Global, however, is a multibillion-dollar corporation with powerful connections worldwide.”
“The company protects the country,” she said, making sense of something she’d wondered about for a while.
How Mirrus had maintained its independence.
“Yes. We have powerful business partners with deeply felt political influence in most major markets.”
“Don’t you mean countries?”
“It is my brother’s job to think in terms of country. I make money.”
“And use it to exert influence.”
“Yes, but also to build infrastructure and improve education and employment for my people.”
“It doesn’t bother you to use your control over money to wield power in other countries?”
“No.”
“You are so sure of yourself and your path.”
“Are you trying to imply you are not? Because we both know that is not true.”
His words shocked her. She wasn’t like that. “I’m not sure what you mean.”
“You have pushed your sustainable fashion agenda to the point you are now influencing not only your magazine, but designers and even clothing manufacturers.”
“I am trying to take care of our planet.” And her influence at her magazine wasn’t nearly as far-reaching as she would like.
Their focus was still almost entirely on traditional fast fashion.
“That is a laudable goal,” he said, approval warm in his voice. “I am taking care of my country.”
