“Sylvie?”

“This is she.”

“Hi, it’s Max, from Cerberus. I’m the IT—”

I laugh. “Hi, Max.”

“I just wanted to let you know that you have an offer on the house and land.”

My hand freezes as I reach for the door handle on my car. “Really? It’s been less than twenty-four hours.”

It feels like years since I was at the clubhouse, but I’m not so out of it that I’ve lost track of time.

“I’m serious.”

“I guess this means another trip to Telluride.”

Will has been captured, so it shouldn’t fill me with as much dread as it does.

“I can schedule a courier for the paperwork,” Max offers. “Spade doesn’t think it would be good for you to return to Telluride.”

“Is that right? Since when does Spade have any say in my life?”

Silence fills the line, and I feel like an asshole. Max is only trying to help, and Spade has somehow managed to wedge the man right between the two of us.

“I’m sorry,” I say in a rush, clamping my fingers on the bridge of my nose. “A courier would be amazing. Do I need to come to the clubhouse to sign the paperwork?”

“No,” he says a little too quickly. “I’ll email them to you for electronic signature.”

“That sounds good. Thank you for doing this for me, Max.”

After I hang up, I’m left confused as to how I can sign electronically but then a courier would be needed. It doesn’t make any sense, but I’ve got too much else swimming around in my head to try and figure any of that mess out.

I wanted to stay away from my house for as long as possible, but after climbing back behind the wheel, I head straight back. I’m exhausted, drained to the point that after I lock myself inside my home, I fall to my bed, uncaring that I’m lying on the bare mattress because putting the sheets in the dryer would just be too much work.

I sleep the rest of the day away, and when I wake to the darkness outside, I feel no more rested than when I a first went to sleep.

I get the feeling as I make my way to the fridge to forage for something to eat that this is the way my life is going to be for a while.

Chapter 34

Spade

“Don’t look at me like that,” I mutter as I stand from the sofa.

“You heard me say I’m going to the hardware store, right?”

“There’s nothing wrong with my hearing. I’m bored as hell. I just want to get out of the fucking clubhouse.”

“You weren’t bored enough to go toJake’swith us last night,” Aro says as he walks toward the front door.

My teammate looks over his shoulder at me as if he’s waiting for a confession. I refuse to speak a word to the man before turning my attention back to Legend.

“Are you saying I can’t go?”

Aro frowns. “This isn’t fucking high school, Spade. You’re more than welcome to help.”

“Help?”
