I grip the steering wheel even tighter. If I thought it would make a difference in her attitude, I’d pull the damn car over to the side of the road and finger her feisty ass to orgasm.

Although I’ve never understood guys who go all fucking possessive over a woman, I’m left wondering if that’s exactly what’s going on now. If she hadn’t stepped back from Will on the sidewalk earlier when he damn near cupped that perfect ass of hers, I would’ve beat his face bloody.

“One minute you pretend you don’t even remember me and the next you’re jealous over an old friend? Make up your fucking mind.”

My first instinct is to argue with her. I was sent with her to protect her. It has nothing to do with jealousy.

Does it?

Am I fucking jealous?

“He has a vibe,” I argue. “It made my skin crawl. I’ve learned to trust those instincts. You should learn to do the same.”

I don’t even touch on the fact that she mentioned pretending not to know her. I didn’t take her for foolish and it’s clear she caught onto my slipup at her grandfather’s house. I don’t think explaining something to her that I don’t even understand myself is going to win me any points right now.

“He’s not creepy,” she hisses. “He’s raising his fucking niece. He’s kind and caring. He—”

“Doesn’t have any siblings,” I snap.

“What?”

I don’t look at her despite feeling her eyes burn into my face.

“Are you fucking kidding me? You did a background check on him? That’s fucking creepy. Do you do that with everyone you feel like is competition, because let me tell you, you’re wasting your time.”

“Because you’ll never see him again,” I growl, that possessiveness I never felt before bubbling out of me.

I’ve never killed a man over a woman before. Well, not in the capacity that this would register. Our job is ninety percent killing men over women, but those women have been abducted and trafficked.

Thinking of snapping Will Varon’s neck makes me smile, and I know I have to look like a fucking psycho right now.

“Because you’re not even part of the equation,” she retorts. “I’m not doing this shit with you. When we get back to Farmington, I never want to see your face again. So drive faster.”

I shift in the small seat, hating that her little outburst turns me on because there’s nothing I can do about it right now. What it doesn’t do is make me believe her. She’s fucking fire and ice, and I can’t wait to have this woman under me again. Jesus, she just fucking does something to me I can’t explain.

“Have you run a background check on me?”

I lift my eyes to my rearview mirror, speeding up a little when a car starts to ride my ass. Once we get around a curve in the road, I slow so they can pass me safely.

“I haven’t.”

“You make it sound like someone else has.”

“I can’t know for sure, but you’re close to Faith, so it wouldn’t surprise me.”

I know without looking at her that her mouth is hanging open in indignant disbelief.

“You’re fucking kidding me, right?”

I shake my head. “Anyone close enough to cause damage to Cerberus gets investigated.”

“Damage? How in the hell would I cause damage to Cerberus? A motorcycle gang full of—”

“Club,” I snap, letting my irritation bubble up. “We’re not a fucking gang.”

She chuckles. “You sound exactly like Faith did when I used the term before.”

“Drop it from your vocabulary. It’s fucking disrespectful.”
