“Am I calling at a bad time?” I asked. She sounded preoccupied and I wanted her attention. I had no problem calling back later.

“No, no, it’s fine now, go ahead with what you were going to ask me,” she said breathily.

“I was thinking that I know who might have set me up. I wanted to run a few names past you.” I could hear more shuffling around in the back, but I kept going, “The leader of Devil Riders, his biker name is Snake. He used to be the former sergeant in arms for the club. I’m sure you heard about him through Naomi at the club. He’s had it out for us since he left and switched sides. He took half our crew. It could be anyone of them, or that girl that was banging Snake from the Sweet Spot.”

“I mean, could be, you’d have to do some digging,” she reasoned. “If it is someone from the Devil Riders, I’m guessing you’re going to find out because if they are after you, they won’t let it rest. Once they found out you got off, they’ll reveal themselves to you.” Her voice sounded more stable and seemed she’d stopped what she was doing.

“You’re right. Smart and cute, aren’t you?” I threw her a little bone to see if she would take it. I’d been flirting relentlessly and she was probably sick of it.

She paused for a beat before she answered, “To be honest, at the start I thought you might have done it. From all the evidence, though, and us talking, I believe you didn’t,” she confessed. Her tone was a little less icy; she was warming up.

This hadn’t been the answer I expected from her. I jerked back from the phone. “You mean you represented me even though you didn’t believe me? What’s that about?” I questioned. My arm was going to sleep behind my head, so I propped up the sofa cushion behind my head as my brows knitted together.

“I’m a defense lawyer. It’s not my job to judge you. It’s my job to defend you with the evidence provided. The facts don’t lie in the court of law. It is what it is and there’s no loyalty in it.”

Her cool tone made my eyebrows shoot up. It saddened me to hear she had no feelings of loyalty, but it sounded contradictory to me, as she definitely had loyalty for the women at the Sweet Spot. Her confusing sentiments convinced me there was more to know about her.

Loyalty was what I stood for as a man, and I couldn’t imagine not being loyal to someone who had helped me in hard times.

This was a woman I needed to figure out, and quickly.
