“What is it?”

“I got your car for you. It’s fixed and the mechanic is delivering it to your place in the morning.”

“You kidding,” I said, hardly daring to believe it. It felt like something out of a fairy tale. My handsome leading man saving the day. But I wasn’t used to someone wanting to do things like this for me, and I wasn’t sure how to express what I really felt about it. “You didn’t have to do that.”

“Yes, I did,” he argued, “I told you back when I met Gavin, let me know if you need anything.”

The set of his jaw and the way his chin jutted out slightly reminded me so much of a stubborn Gavin that I felt like my heart might burst. “I’m an adult, Smoke. I can’t just run to you for help all the time.”

“Says who?”

I laughed. “Well, me. For starters.”

“I hate to break it to you, sweetheart, but you’re my girl and that means I take care of you.”

I didn’t know if it was because he called me his girl, or the determination to help me out, but I felt an affection for him so strong, it could only be the beginning of love blooming. I tried to tell myself it was too soon for that, but I knew what I felt. My heart belonged to him now. “Thank you,” I said, moving closer to him as I spoke, until only inches separated us. “I’ll find a way to make it up to you.”

Smoke’s grin was wicked. “Don’t worry sweetheart, I’ll help you with that.”

I bet he would.
