“There’s something about him that draws me in,” I explained. “I can’t fight it. I don’t even want to.”

“Oh my god, you’re falling for him.”

It wasn’t a question but I automatically shook my head no. “I’m not falling for him,” I insisted.

“Don’t you lie to me, Harper Jean,” Abby said, sounding remarkably like my mom.

“Okay, fine. I might be falling for him, a little. But it doesn’t matter. I agreed not to try to make this into more than it is.”

“You never know, he might change his mind.”

I thought about the look on Bones’ face when he told me that he didn’t want a serious relationship. He’d been resolute.

“I don’t think so, but I’m going to have fun with him while it lasts. Speaking of fun, I’ve also decided to buy a new car.”

“Really? You’re finally going to get rid of that old rust bucket you’ve been driving around in for months?”

“Yep. I’m going to lease a new car. A convertible.”

I decided that a convertible was a great way to cling to the sense of fun that Bones had helped to awaken inside of me. It was the closest I could get to a bike of my own, letting the wind whip through my hair.

“Who are you and what have you done with Harper?” Abby asked. I smiled and rolled my eyes. “Seriously, Harper, I’m thrilled to see you spending some of the money you’ve been saving up for years. You really need a nicer car, anyway.”

“I don’t love that my savings are going to take such a big hit, but it’s worth it.”

“You’re really growing as a person. That’s great. I’m proud of you.”

Her words meant a lot to me. I’d struggled to move past my fear of being broke, which caused me to work my butt off and squirrel away money. I decided the best way to get past it was to invest in something big I needed. I would be okay. This would help me find balance in my life as I got used to doing more with myself than working all the time.

Thanks to Bones showing me how to live better.
