After all, I was good at lingering in the shadows.
“Now tell me,” I tried to distract her. “Is today everything you dreamed of, kroshka?” I asked my young wife. It wasn’t a lavish wedding. I didn’t think I could handle a wedding filled with people I didn’t know. But I was willing to do it for her.
I wanted to be everything she wanted.
“It was even better,” she beamed as she rose to her tiptoes and kissed me on my mouth. “So much better. You are everything - my heartbeat, my heart. You’re all I want in my life. I love you.”
A rough sound rumbled in my chest, just as it did every time she said those words to me. I’d never tire of hearing it.
“I love you too, kroshka.” My chest grew heavy with all the emotions. I didn’t deserve her, but I’d keep her all the same.
Her and our family.
Because we are doing this together.
