Picking up my phone, I clicked on Sienna’s contact. It rang straight through to voicemail, which I simply ended. I wasn’t about to leave a voice message about the report. My fingers tapped against the wheel. Sienna’s offices were just next to ours, a few buildings over. If she was actually there. I guess there was one way to find out.
I didn’t know why she wasn’t answering her phone. I really hoped it was because she was busy and not doing something behind my back. Pushing open the door to the Rosania’s shipping offices, I made my way to the front desk. Their building was a hell of a lot nicer than ours. Where ours had cement flooring, theirs had classy tiles, and where ours had shabby desks and drawers, theirs looked like the front for a high-end salon. This is just another example of how different our family’s businesses were and something I had planned on changing as soon as I was Don. My father cared for looks, but not when it came to his business. That was just a front for his more lucrative dealings, but I knew it could be more.
“May I help you?” The woman at the front desk eyed me in a not-so-subtle I want to fuck you sort of way. She was hot. I wasn’t going to lie. Big brown eyes, full lips that were just begging to be devoured. But she wasn’t Sienna.
I leaned against her desk, my suit jacket straining against my chest and arms. “Yeah, I need to see my wife.”
Her eyes widened slightly before she picked up the phone. It didn’t take long for her to motion me towards the elevator. Yeah, their building had a god damn elevator. I made my way upstairs to the second floor, where Sienna’s office was. Well, her father’s office that she’d now taken over.
Opaque glass surrounded her corner office, making it nearly impossible to see through. I knocked on the door, eyeing the well-kept cubicles lined up in the center. Her employees were careful to keep their heads down, so focused on their work that they couldn’t possibly be paying any attention to me. I rolled my eyes just as the door opened.
Mateo’s face darkened as soon as he saw me. “Dante.”
“Good morning, Mateo. How are you today?” I flashed him my most shit-eating grin before brushing past him. He scowled, shutting the door firmly behind me.
Sienna was seated, pushing a few papers into a manila folder before setting it aside. “What are you doing here?”
“I’ve got news. Which you would know if you answered your damn phone,” I replied, waving my own phone in the air.
Her eyes flicked towards Mateo. “It’s dead,” she said, voice flat.
Of course, it was. Even if her phone was so clearly on the charger behind her chair. I ignored that, making myself comfortable, and took a seat across from her. Her lips parted, probably to tell me to fuck off before she pressed them into a firm line. My eyes tracked her movement, the thought of capturing those lips between my teeth too tantalizing to ignore.
“You said you have news?” she asked, clearly reading the lust written on my face.
“Right. Yes. I got a call from the lab guy at the NYPD.” I handed over my phone. “It’s all there.”
Her eyes quickly scanned the screen, a slight frown tugging the edges of her lips downwards. Sienna glanced up at me sharply. “Venom.”
“Yup.”
Mateo sidled closer, giving me a disapproving glare. “What is this?”
“Report from my father’s autopsy.” She handed him my phone before I could object.
“This is nothing we don’t already know,” Mateo replied gruffly, nearly shoving my phone back into my hands.
I shrugged. “I just thought Sienna might want confirmation.”
Sienna’s long nails tapped against the desktop, her face thoughtful. “Mateo is right. This isn’t a new lead.”
“No, but that doesn’t mean it’s entirely useless,” I told her. “Did you read all of it?”
Both Mateo and Sienna frowned. I sighed, pulling up the file again before swiping to the right spot. Once I found it, I slid the phone back across the desk. Mateo leaned over Sienna’s shoulder as they read what I’d highlighted.
“But that’s impossible,” Sienna whispered. She glanced at Mateo sharply. “He’s dead.”
“Clearly not dead enough.” I smirked, feeling pretty proud of myself for catching what they didn’t.
Sienna shoved her chair back, already grabbing her bag. “Then I guess we need to double back and visit an old friend of ours.”
I smiled. “I’ll drive.”
NINE
SIENNA
Marco’s apartment looked the same as it had just a few weeks ago. I knew it was empty, but it still made me nervous. Before, we’d come at night to deal with Marco. Now, it was broad daylight where anyone could see us. This neighborhood might know who Dante and I were and who our families were, but that wouldn’t stop anyone from spreading the word to the wrong people.
