“I’d like to see you try.”
Penny sighs, rolling her eyes. “Be nice, it’s my day, remember?”
“Sorry Mama,” they both say.
“Let’s go eat.”
It’s organized chaos as everyone in the backyard makes for two long tables that have been set up. I’m situated between Danny and a little girl of about seven. “I’m Mirabella.” She grins over at me, showing two missing front teeth.
“I’m Hayden.”
“You’re Uncle Danny’s girlfriend?” She giggles. “You’re so pretty.”
“You are too.” I smile back at her. Turning to him, I nudge his knee with mine. “Who all have you told about me?”
Turning to face me, he winks. “Anybody that’ll listen, babe. Anybody that’ll listen.”
