She took her pile of clothing from the foot of the bed and sidestepped him on her way to the bathroom. She slammed the door shut and locked it behind her.
Brennan took the bridge of his nose between his thumb and index finger.
“What the hell?” he whispered.
“I’m sure she’s moping around here somewhere.”
Errin looked over her shoulder from the downward dog position on her gym mat in the living room.
A zen voice from the television directed Errin to change positions and take a deep breath in between. That was all good, but first Errin needed to set her sister straight.
“Moping? No way, sis!” Errin shouted to Kayla who held her step in the doorway to the living room, causing Kate to bump into her from behind.
“Hi, Bunny. We just wanted to see how you’re doing, after last night working with Brennan,” Kate said over Kayla’s shoulder.
“Yeah, yeah. Everything’s fine. Justfine.Okay?”
Errin resumed her workout on the gym mat and tried another position, while her sisters took a seat on the sofa next to her. Holding on to her candle pose wasn’t easy with four eyes following her every move.
“What?!” Errin ultimately shouted.
“Okay, sunshine. Namaste,” Kayla said and snickered.
Errin let her legs fall down on the mat and huffed a breath. She peered through some loose strands in front of her face and winced at Kate’s worried expression.
She should’ve known that after her first shift at Lucky last night, her sisters would check up on her. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to be such a bitch,” Errin said.
“We’re used to it,” Kate said.
After a second, the three sisters broke out in laughter since it was out of character for Kate to deadpan. Usually the roles were reversed.
“Donovan sure is rubbing off on you, sis,” Kayla said while giving Kate’s shoulder a playful shove with her own.
“Yeah, alternating between rubbing off on her and simply rubbing on her,” Errin said, causing Kate’s cheeks to turn an even darker shade of red.
“You make my boss sound like a dog in heat,” Kayla said.
“And? Your point is?” Errin shrugged and laughed at Kate’s uneasiness, as she’d rather not talk about all the hot sex she and Donovan were having.
Well, too bad the walls in this apartment spoke for themselves. Errin had the misfortune to overhear them multiple times in the beginning of their relationship. Yuck.
Kate cleared her throat and changed topics. “I’ve got an old smart phone for you. I think you’ll like it better than the one you’ve got now as a replacement. It’s in my bottom drawer. Mmm, at least I think it’s here somewhere…” she tapped her chin with a finger.
“Or it’s at your actual home, you know, with Donovan,” Errin said. She straightened up from the mat to walk over to the kitchen.
“What crawled up your yoga mat? Let Kate be. She’s happy with Don,” Kayla said.
Kate adverted her eyes and kept them on a spot at the coffee table in front of her. Shit. Errin walked over to the sofa, almost hanging upside down over the backrest, to smack a kiss on Kate’s cheek.
“I’m an idiot. Sorry. If you could lend me your old phone, that’ll be awesome.”
Kate patted Errin’s cheek, already forgiving her. “You can have it, sis. No problem. So, how did it go last night?”
As Errin rounded the kitchen counter, she raised her voice a bit to make sure her sisters heard her loud and clear, in more ways than one.
“I’ve got nothing to report. I’ve worked behind a bar before. Everything’s just the same. It’s an Irish pub with a vibe as to be expected. Except for Emmy, who sure makes the most delicious food. I will get zero callbacks on my next auditions because they’ll have to roll me off the stage.”
They laughed. “It was fun. The Saturday night party crowd came in after Emmy closed the kitchen. I concocted a lot of new mixed drinks, had a few laughs with the regulars and hung out with some Mills brothers.”
