“You wouldn’t,” Kate gasped. But she already knew she would. Oh, she so would do that. Errin was a real tenacious pit bull if someone even thought about hurting one of her own.
“You know I would. Perhaps Dunc can knock some sense into that arrogant ass.”
Kate stood up and turned the lock. When she slowly opened the door, she saw the worry in Errin’s eyes, which made Kate tear up even more.
“Ahh, shhh, sis. He’s so not worth it. What was he even doing here? I didn’t know that you were seeing him?”
“I’m not. We were… I don’t know what happened. I thought he wanted to kiss me before—”
“Before I came in and ruined it? I would like to say that I’m sorry, but after he turned so cold, I’m not sorry at all.” She squeezed Kate firmly in a big hug, kissing her cheek.
“Who knew that boys would still suck in their thirties? I don’t know why we women still try with them. We should all follow the lesbian rulebook of love and ditch every single one of them assholes,” Errin grumbled and then giggled at her own ridiculousness.
Kate giggled softly along with her sister while wiping away another tear. She offered, “I was watching The Bachelor and eating ice cream.”
“Ah, perfect. Ice cream is just the right remedy for a broken heart. Come, let’s go.” Errin nudged her arm and made Kate walk in front of her from the bedroom into the living room. She settled on the sofa, and Errin picked up a pink fluffy throw blanket and draped it over them. After watching the rest of the show, along with Errin’s commentary, Kate decided to go to bed.
Errin tried to bring up Donovan, but Kate didn’t want to talk about it ever again. She wanted to forget it ever happened. She had to ask herself the question, what did happen, really? They didn’t even kiss. All they did this evening was quarrel. Yes, he may have wanted her, but he made his choice tonight. He left her standing and said to forget it. Well, she sure was going to try. She glanced at her phone when a text came in.
BREE:What happened to you tonight? Didn’t feel like coming?
KATE:Was home having a threesome with Ben and Jerry ;)
BREE: Such a slut… ;) Well, you didn’t miss much tho.
KATE: Did u see Declan tonight?
BREE: Yes, he was there… ignored his ass. That will show him, right?
KATE: Ha! You go, girl. He doesn’t know what he’s missing out on.
BREE: Oh, he knows. And he still doesn’t want me. Aaargh… Is there a pill I can take to get over him?
KATE: No, sorry, Bree. But I love you, girl. Who needs guys anyway?
BREE: I knew it was a good idea to tell you about the job last April! ;) Love you too.
After a long and scalding hot shower, Kate felt ready for bed. She walked out of their worn-out pink bathroom into the hallway and tapped a knuckle on Errin’s halfway-opened bedroom door. “Good night, Bunny. Thanks for tonight.”
“I love you, sis. I would never let someone walk over you like that,” Errin said while sitting cross-legged on top of her covers on the bed. She had changed into her green boy shorts pajamas with a matching green tank top and held her phone in her lap. Her sisters were both so lean and lithe, so contrasting to Kate with her curves from top to bottom. Errin looked up lovingly, and Kate wished she didn’t need someone to stick up for her like Errin did tonight. She certainly didn’t want her younger sister to fight her battles.
While lying awake that night in bed, she swore to herself that she was going to change. This infatuation with Donovan had to stop. She never wanted to cry over him ever again. If he didn’t want her, plenty of fish in the sea left, right? She would just have to figure out how to coexist in their shared social circle.
Bree was doing it, and so could she. She would tell Bree all the details of this night on Monday at work, but for now she wanted to wallow alone. Maybe on Monday they could join forces to stop their infatuations.
“I can’t stay at home forever and keep eating ice cream on a Saturday night. I need to get a life. Screw him,” Kate whispered to herself, and then she giggled at her own words. She rarely swore, and even “screw him” sounded foreign coming from her lips. Ha, maybe that was the first sign of her change in attitude.
