He was bare chested and looked beautiful, such a strong man with bulky muscles and a six-pack above his jeans. Seeing the V shape with a happy trail toward his crotch, she swiftly turned her head to the closet again. She had to behave and not act on her feelings. She knew these apartments were definitely not soundproof because she could hear Mister Whisker every day.
She spotted her favorite T-shirt for bed—a large white one with a deep V-neck that came to midthigh. She’d bought this shirt by mistake a few years back, not realizing it was a man’s. She relished the soft material and loved the way it engulfed her as a soft dress for nighttime. Kayla could feel his eyes on her back as she put the shirt on before walking toward the bed. He sat there with his hands behind his head and a brooding expression on his face, not what she was expecting.
When she’d almost reached him, he suddenly shot off the bed and grabbed his T-shirt from the chair. He stalked toward her and halted right in front of her. She stood still, holding her breath. Taking the hem of her shirt, he oh-so-slowly pulled it up her body. When she cooperated and raised her arms above her head, he pulled the shirt completely off and threw it on the floor.
He looked her in the eye and said, “From now on, you’ll only wear my shirt.” Kayla realized he must have thought she’d worn another guy’s shirt. Smiling, she nodded in agreement.
He kissed her lips softly, and after their sweet kiss, she released her breath. He slipped his shirt on her and gently pulled her hair out of the back. “So beautiful. I love the feel of your hair around my fingers.” He combed his fingers through her long, wet hair, and Kayla couldn’t help but moan softly at his touch.
Wearing his shirt, she could smell him all around. The scent was so manly, and all of her senses stirred. When she opened her eyes, she noticed him looking at her. He had a soft smile around his luscious lips as she went on the tip of her toes to kiss him again. She nipped at his bottom lip.
“Mmm, please, Kayla. Take what you want. Take me.”
Now it was Kayla who was smiling. Taking what she wanted wasn’t a description of her in the bedroom. Outside of the bedroom, she was a strong woman, and she had no problem standing up for herself. She was ambitious and worked hard to reach her goals. But in the bedroom? No, she was the one who was being seduced, and she was certainly not the one in charge.
Could she be that person with Duncan?
Duncan was even moreconvincedto take things slow with Kayla after his talk with Calum. He was in it for the long haul, so taking it slow was no problem for him. Calum was acting all big brother after he opened the door for Duncan tonight. He probably knew he couldn’t scare a big guy such as Duncan, but he knew how to push his buttons just the same.
“We both know my sister is like no other. She’s special. You treat her good, as she deserves, and you and I have no problems.” Duncan nodded at Calum’s words. Calum stood in the living room with his arms crossed in front of his chest and his eyes narrowed as he looked at Duncan. “For now, I hope that you’ll look out for her. Maybe she wants to stay here, but I hope that’s not the case, honestly. We’ve missed her so much; her family wants her back in New Jersey.”
Duncan already guessed that Kayla’s family would want her back to stay with them—he would too—but he stood quiet as Calum spoke again. “But that being said, nobody can change Kayla’s mind when she has something in her head. That’s a given. She’s one stubborn girl, and if she chooses to stay here with you, I swear to God, you’d better treat her like a princess.”
Duncan gave Calum his hand to shake and looked him in the eye, giving him no reason to think he wasn’t serious as he said, “I can’t speak from experience coming from a family of five brothers, but I think I know where you’re coming from. I hope I can convince you that she’s safe here with me, my family, and friends. We all want to look after her; we want her here with us. I feel protective of Kayla, and I’ll tell you, Calum, I’m falling for your sister.”
“I figured as much” was Calum’s only response. He didn’t even raise a brow at his confession. For Duncan it was a big deal to confess such to Kayla’s brother, but he could see that Calum was still wary of his intentions. Damn, he was one hard nut to crack.
“I guess we’ll see each other in the morning?”
Duncan confirmed while nodding at Calum.
“Well, I hope you’ll be respectful and I won’t need to take out my gun tonight,” Calum said with an arched brow.
Duncan wanted to laugh, but he figured Calum was dead serious, so he decided against a smart retort. “Good night, Calum.”
Calum lifted his chin once in acknowledgment and walked out of the living room. Duncan heard Kayla walking in the hallway toward her bedroom and talking to Calum for a bit. Duncan then followed her inside her bedroom. He wasn’t expecting Kayla to give in so easily when he said he would stay the night. He had to tell himself once again that he would give her time to come to him. He would let her set the pace.
