“Goddammit. That’s why you were being so sketchy,” Ella said.
“Yes. I’m sorry. If I’d have fixed it, Teri might still be alive.”
Ella sighed then summoned Paige back over. “Maybe. Maybe not. Chances are the killer would have gotten to her another way. Someone like this wouldn’t let a lock stop them.”
She wasn’t sure where the reassurance ended and the truth began. More than likely, the unsub would have indeed found another way into the apartment if not for the attic. Even though Larry was a criminal, he didn’t deserve to have that murder on his conscience for the rest of his life.
“I know you probably still suspect me, but I can show you the video of me and my brother breaking in. The door was locked from the inside. That’ll be enough to clear me, right?”
“Possibly, but we’ll need to see it. We also need a list of everyone who works for you. Employees, contractors, anyone who might know about this lack-of-lock situation. Okay?”
“Fine. I’ll email it over.”
“No. You’re going to go inside your house and give my partner the details right now.”
Ella expected a rebuttal but none came. Larry must have learned his lesson.
“Alright.”
“Ellis, you’re up,” Ella shouted. “Get in there and get the details. I’ll join you shortly.”
Paige followed the instructions. “Roger that. What are you doing?”
“I’ll be outside. I just need to make a call.”
