“Bank statements only, and they were in the green. That’s all I care about. She told me she was a chef but I never checked.”

“Ella, can I borrow you?” Paige called. “Look at this.”

The two agents inspected the door frame. “What are we looking at?” Ella asked.

Paige ran a gloved finger across a small hole. “The deadbolt clasp came off when the lock got drilled. That meant the bolt was in place too.”

Ella fit the pieces together.

“He didn’t leave through this door.” She scanned the area for anything that could double as an exit. Nothing but a few small windows that a child could barely fit through. “Bedroom window?” she asked.

Both agents went into the bedroom and gently opened the curtains. One window, and one that could potentially be considered an escape route if not for the thirty-foot drop on the other side.

Ella was beginning to get an idea of this unsub’s profile and she didn’t like what it told her.

“Ellis, I’m starting to think that our perp is completely insane.”
