“Do you know your boss is in business with my brother?”

“Yeah, how do you know?”

“I have my ways.”

“Okay, is that it?”

“No. Just shut up and listen.” I raise my eyebrows and rapidly blink at his rudeness as he continues. “I think we may be able to help each other. Meet me at Karmic Café on 3rd Street in an hour– 9 am sharp.”

“Well-“ he hangs up the phone, and I’m not sure what to do with myself. I don’t really have anything else planned except sit at home with Kinzi and wait for Jess to respond to me, so I take a quick shower and slip on my usual outfit. A turtleneck, slacks, and because I still want to have some semblance of myself in what I wear, a pair of black low-top Vans.

I leave Kinzi some breakfast and grab my black petticoat off the couch.

“I’ll be back!” I wave to her, and she tilts her head as if to say, “see you later,” and I slip out the door. I call an Uber while I’m walking down the fire escape, and by the time I’m at the bottom, it’s waiting for me on the street.

As I plop into the front seat, my driver, Aodán, asks, “Karmic?” while clicking through his navigation system.

“Yessir.” I nod. “So, how long have you been an Uber driver?” I tilt my head towards him, and he turns on the radio in response. That either means, too long or not enough, and I know I shouldn't bother the man anymore, so I look out the window for the remainder of the drive.

If the rest of my day will be anything like the start, I have no doubt it’s going to be the most interesting one I’ve had in quite a while… and I’m in the FBI.
