She bit her bottom lip. “It didn’t feel that way when I first came home, but I know that now.”
I actually believed her. The last few days, there’d been a change in Kenna. She might have accepted me, accepted my relationship with Brock, and me as her sister. “This is just so surreal. My brain can’t quite grasp that you’re the one responsible. In a way, I’m kind of impressed.”
A whisper of a grin curled on her lips. “It does give me a rush,” she admitted.
“Do you often partake in criminal activity?” I was more or less joking, but also not.
She glanced left and then right for oncoming traffic before making another turn. There were none. Not at this time at night. “Only when the mood strikes.”
Curious, I asked, “How many times have you snuck out?”
She tapped her thumb on the steering wheel. “Do you want a precise number?”
“Christ,” I exhaled through my teeth. “Iftheyfound out you were sneaking out alone…?”
“Which is why you’re not going to tell them.” She looked to me, seeking confirmation that I would keep her little secret.
She was asking me to lie to the most important person in my life. I scowled. “I won’t lie to them.” I couldn’t do it. Not even for my sister.
“Funny, because all they seem to do is keep the truth from both of us.”
She had me there. “I won’t say anything unless they ask,” I corrected. Lie by omission was a lie I could live with. And they’d have no reason to suspect Kenna, so I figured her secret was safe. For now. “Who is tonight’s target?”
Her grin was scary. “Oh, someone you’ll definitely approve of. Tonight is a big showstopper.”
