His body jerked. “What?”

“My heart stopped, but everything’s okay now.”

“Is there more?” God, he couldn’t take too much more.

“They put me in a coma so my body could concentrate on dealing with the disease. I finally started to get better. I was weak, but I started to eat solid food, and when they finally put me in a room, Rhys got to be there with me. When I was in ICU, he could only come in for ten minutes an hour. I can’t imagine how frustrating that would be.”

“That explains how skinny you are.”

“Yes. I’ve gained close to ten pounds back already.”

Fuck, he tried to imagine her like that. She would have looked emaciated.

“It’s one way to diet.” She chuckled. “But I wouldn’t recommend it, though.”

There were so many questions, but one kept pounding in his brain.

“Why didn’t you or Rhys call me?” God, the question was eating away at him.

“I made him promise he wouldn’t.”

It took him a moment to let that sink in before he rolled out of bed and slipped on some jeans. “Why? Don’t you think I would have liked to know my woman was dying?”

Hannah raised up on one elbow. “You were just starting to get really busy. You’ve been working so hard and so long, and it was finally paying off. I didn’t want to take that from you.”

“Don’t you think I deserved to make that decision?” he yelled. He hated making her flinch. He knew he was close to the edge. She’d been deathly sick, and he’d just about lost her a few times, and she didn’t think he needed to know?

Pinching the bridge of his nose, he closed his eyes. Cullen couldn’t get over the fact she’d kept something so important from him. He didn’t know what he would have done if she had died, and he could have spent some of her last hours together. He wanted to be there for her when she needed him.

“Are you one hundred percent better now?”

“Yes.”

“No lingering condition we have to watch?”

“No. I’m perfectly healthy.”

He wiped a hand down his face and grabbed a t-shirt and shoes.

“I’ve got to go, but I’ll be back.”

She sat up and pressed the blanket to her chest. “Where are you going?”

“I need time to think about this. I’m angry right now, and I don’t want to make another mistake yelling at you. Rest and I’ll be back.”

He could see the confusion and pain in her eyes, but he felt the wave of fury and regret he was fighting not to let loose and hurt her feelings. He could say nothing else right then without yelling at her, and she already looked fragile.

After he stormed out of the house, he started walking. His car was at work, but he needed the time to cool down.

Cars, people, and buses passed him, and he didn’t even notice them. He was oblivious to everything around him and stuck in his head.

He tracked Rhys down in his office when he got to the building. Rhys stood when Cullen walked into his office.

“What’s going on?” Rhys asked.

A wave of fury caught him off guard. Cullen punched him in the jaw, and he knew he had to have surprised him for Cullen to be able to take him down.

Cullen stood over him. He wanted to whale on him, but he didn’t want to upset Hannah any more than she already was.
