Sofia nodded. “Why?”

“Because I have a business proposition for you. One I think you’ll like.” He didn’t have time to do all the research needed on A Fresh Day and then get another presentation prepared for Rosslyn. But why couldn’t he hire Sofia to do it for him?

“I’m not working for you Dylan. That would make things…complicated.”

She was right, it would. “I was thinking about Grayson Corp.”

“You can’t offer me a job for a company that isn’t yours, either. I’m tired, but not asleep,” she said sarcastically.

“I’m filling in for Rosslyn while she’s out on maternity leave. She owns Grayson Corp. So technically, I can hire you to work for her. And from what I see, she’s missing a liaison, someone who has time to research and meet with agencies like A Fresh Day.”

“I thought you were doing that tomorrow?” Sofia asked.

“I am, but that means I’m not working on contracts for Lawson Steel. I’m spreading myself out too thin again. And if you take on doing this, then I can do what I need to do.” And get you in the city.

“That sounds great, but Dylan, you’re forgetting one thing. I live here. I’d still be traveling every day. The only difference would be who I work for. I think I should just keep things as they are.”

“Unless you stay with me,” he said.

Her eyes darkened and she huffed. “Dylan Lawson, that’s the second time today you’ve pulled that crap. Is this some kind of game you’re playing to get me into your bed?”

In a serious tone, Dylan replied, “Sofia, if that were my goal, all I’d need to do is this.” He leaned over and gently placed his lips on hers. A soft moan escaped her and she leaned into him. It’d be so easy to pull her onto his lap and continue. But she was exhausted and when he did have her, he wanted to make sure she was well rested. Because you’re going to need it.

Pulling away, he looked down at her. She cleared her throat and blinked several times to open her eyes. “I guess…you…made your point.” Sofia let her head rest on his shoulder. “And this is why I shouldn’t live with you.”

“Afraid we won’t hold back?” he asked.

She shook her head. “Nope. I already know the answer.” Snuggling closer she added so softly, it was barely a whisper, “We won’t.”

He could tell from her breathing that Sofia had fallen asleep. Dylan wasn’t about to wake her. She needed rest most of all. Slipping out from beside her, he guided her down to lie on the couch. Then he slipped off her shoes and put her feet on the couch. There was a small blanket on the rocker and he covered her. Placing a kiss on her forehead, he said, “Sweet dreams,” before letting himself out.

As he got into his car, he realized she hadn’t answered him about the job or the living arrangement. It’s funny that she said she didn’t want anyone telling her what to do, when in reality, he didn’t believe she’d ever allow it to happen in the first place. I don’t think I’m the only stubborn one. It just looked better on her.
