“If I’m asking the question, it is my business. Now answer it. Are you involved with anyone?”

Since she had broken it off with Charles last night, she could honestly say no. They were meeting for coffee; that was it. Nothing further than that was going to happen. “I am not.”

“Are you sure about that? Because lying to me would not be wise. And you, young lady, are acting like you are hiding something.”

“My odd behavior is because you refused to allow me to use the ladies’ room,” Rosslyn said, holding firm to her answer. If Uncle Max found out she’d been sleeping with Charles, he’d flip. God knows what he’d do. The agent reached into the desk and pulled out the large envelope she had placed in there on Friday. “You can’t go through his things without a warrant.”

She didn’t know that for sure, but that’s what they said in the movies. He ignored her and said, “I find your lack of cooperation disturbing.” He opened it, pulled out photos, and laid them out on the desk. Her jaw dropped. It was her with Charles. They weren’t just talking either. One picture even had his hand on her breast. It seemed to have been taken through a window while she was at his penthouse.

Was Uncle Max watching her? Why?

“I can explain these.”

“You don’t need to. They tell a very interesting story. What I don’t know is why are you sleeping with Maxwell Grayson’s main competition?”

Because I have fallen in love with him and can’t stop myself. That was the truth. One that she wasn’t about to admit to the agent or anyone else. Not even to Charles. That was the final straw that said they didn’t belong together.

“I didn’t know who he was at the beginning, but it is over now.”

“Really? Why is it I don’t believe you? If I went to Lawson Steel and spoke to Mr. Lawson, would he say the same thing?”

God I hope so.“I cannot speak for him. But I ended it last night.”

“Why?”

“Once again, that is none of your business.”

“This is part of an investigation. And if I deem it important, I won’t stop until I have the answer.”

She was a horrendous liar. And somehow she had the feeling the truth would come out anyway. “He wanted to pay for an apartment for me and I refused.”

“And you stopped seeing him over that?”

“Yes. It made me feel . . . well it wasn’t nice.” Her feelings definitely weren’t important to him. She wasn’t sure if they still were to Charles.

“And that was the end of it. Just like that?”

“If you mean did I cry myself to sleep and regret ever meeting him? Then the answer is yes. Now if you don’t mind, I’m going to pee myself if you don’t let me go now.”

“One more question. Did you know Mr. Grayson was tracking you?”

Shaking her head, she said, “I don’t know why he would. I normally live a very simple life.”

“That’s not how I’d describe these pictures, but then again, my idea of simple might not be the same as yours. You may go now. I’ll be in contact if I have any questions.”

She practically ran down the hall. Not so much because she needed to pee, but she was sick to her stomach, seeing the photos of her and Charles. Some were quite intimate. How could you, Uncle Max? How could you?

Seth entered his office and asked, “Have you seen the news?”

Charles had intentionally kept the TV off. Nothing was going to distract him from talking Rosslyn into forgiving him. And maybe giving it another week. He hadn’t slept a wink last night and his head was pounding. “No. Why?”

“That Feds are at Grayson Corp. I heard they are talking to all the employees too.”

Rosslyn. Sorry sweetheart, I would’ve warned you but . . . who was he kidding? He wasn’t going to tell her. Not as long as she worked for Maxwell. “That’s no surprise. Gareth delivered the file yesterday. I have to admit they acted faster than I thought, but then again, we had some serious documentation in there.”

“I don’t think that’s why they are there. There’s a rumor that Maxwell’s private jet might have crashed.”

What the hell?“You’re not fucking with me, are you?”
