Although she didn’t want to let him go, she wanted this time out with him too. And if she was lucky, she might learn a bit more from Sal.

“Maybe listen to a few more songs before we go?”

He held the chair for her and once she was seated he turned to Sal. “This is a table for two.”

Sal called over the waitress who was already bringing another chair. “You should know by now, I think of everything.”

Charles gave him a warning look and then turned to her. “Would you like to stop for some dessert after? I’m sure Mama would love to hear how our evening went.”

Sal got up from the chair and said, “That’s low.”

Charles laughed. “Guess you didn’t think of everything now did you?”

Sal reached out and took Rosslyn’s hand in his, then bent and placed a kiss on it. “It was a pleasure meeting you, Rosslyn. Take care of this one. He needs watching.”

She didn’t know what to say. Charles ran one of the largest steel businesses in the world. He didn’t need her. Surely Sal knew that. “Nice meeting you too, Sal.”

As they sat back down and were once again alone, a chill ran through her. She’d been on cloud nine all week. It was perfect. But Sal’s words haunted her. He didn’t say Charles needed her, but he needed watching. What exactly did that mean? Was there something she didn’t know? Of course there is. We’ve only known each other for two weeks.

Everything was moving so fast. And they were going back to see her parents tomorrow. Should she cancel until she knew him better? It wasn’t what she wanted to do. And her parents were already expecting him. Her father had invited them to dinner, a real sit-down-at-the-table meal. That was something they hadn’t done in more than a year.

For all her concerns about what might be wrong with Charles, she smiled, thinking of all the things that were so right. Nope. She wasn’t giving up this weekend. It was something she needed. Charles might need it too. But even more importantly, her parents needed it most.

Charles tightened his hold on her. “You okay?”

She nodded. “I was thinking we could leave after this song.”

He smiled down at her. “You must’ve read my mind.”

She leaned back in the chair with her head resting on his shoulder. Rosslyn needed to hold on to the good moments. She knew it could all change in a blink of an eye, and this would be all they had.
