“Oh, yeah. That.” She sighed. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea. I mean, where would we go?”
“Does it matter? Can’t I surprise you?” I asked.
“You could, but I would spend all day tomorrow thinking what the surprise is. See, I hate surprises, just in case you haven’t learned that by now. Guess it’s because usually they’re not good ones,” she said.
“I promise, this will be an amazing one. You’ll love it. Can you trust me just this once?” I pleaded.
“Fine. But I don’t want to spend my time driving around when this is the last time we’ll see each other.”
I hated hearing her talk like that. She continued to remind me that once I left for Tabiq for the wedding, this was over. “I’ll be travelling back and forth so I can see my brother. There’s no reason we can’t continue seeing each other as well.”
“Yes, there is. I explained that no one can ever know about us,” she said firmly. “We were lucky no one saw us when we were together that one time. We can’t risk it again.”
It was time to have the difficult conversation we’d been avoiding.
“Kyleigh, maybe if I went with you to talk to your parents, they’d understand. I mean, I know I’m not the greatest catch, but I’m not a total ass.”
“Liam, this has nothing to do with you and everything to do with my parents. They are not going to accept you. And if we try, all it’s going to do is hurt my parents. I can’t do that to them. They’ve suffered enough already,” she said.
Suffered?I wanted to know what that meant, but the sadness in her eyes said it was too painful to talk about.
“I’ll respect your wishes, but if we happen to cross paths while I’m in Tabiq, I’m not going to pretend I don’t know you,” I warned her.
“That’s fine. Just pretend like you only know my name. Nurse Marzon,” she said.
I laughed. “I don’t even call Reesa ‘President Florraz’.”
“I know. We need to work on that,” she smiled. “Hey, I was just thinking. Is that offer for food still available? Because I’m starving!”
“Want to go out and try a new restaurant?” I suggested.
“How about we skip dinner and just have dessert?” she said.
When a woman suggested skipping dinner and heading straight to dessert, it was usually a hint for me to take them to bed and have sex. But I knew Kyleigh better than that.
“What are you in the mood for?” I asked.
“Morgan was telling me about this place that has cheesecake. I’ve never tried that. But she said they have one that has chocolate drizzled with caramel. It sounds delicious.”
I got up and reached for her hand. “I know the place.”
She didn’t take my hand. Instead, she said, “Do you think they deliver?”
“I’m sure they do. Why, are you tired?” I asked.
“No. I was just thinking we could have dessert in bed,” she smiled.
“Keep looking at me like that and we might start right here on the couch,” I warned.
She reached out and pulled me back onto the couch. “Not a bad idea.”
“I thought you were hungry,” I reminded her.
“I am.” Then she licked my neck and said, “Tasty.”
Fuck. I’ll get her something substantial to eat, but first, I’m going to feed her current craving.
