Chapter 23

Reesa

I rolled over expecting Finn to be sound asleep beside me. Unfortunately, his side of the bed was vacant, and the sheets cold. We had been sharing a suite at New Hope for a month now, so I was getting used to him disappearing in the middle of the night. Emergencies happened at all hours of the day, and he would rush off to the hospital.

It proved time and time again that Finn was the right choice. All my fears of the people of Tabiq not accepting him were fading as he quickly had gained their trust. Even Logan had said he was impressed with Finn. It wouldn’t be long before Logan felt comfortable enough to head back to the U.S.

I dragged myself from the bed and went into the bathroom to shower and start my day. If I was going to be here alone, I might as well get some work done. It was important for me to go into the office today, and Bennett said he’d give me the ride. Eventually I wanted to be able to drive myself again, but things were still so fresh in my mind that I wasn’t in any hurry for that just yet.

Once I was showered and dressed, I grabbed my laptop and spent the next few hours answering emails. With Finn gone, I had no excuse not to work and it felt good being so productive this early in the day. Hopefully that meant when he returned tonight, we could be together with no distractions.

There was a knock on my door, and I closed my laptop. Although I didn’t want to go into the office, it felt nice leaving the resort. Everything here was extremely nice, but it didn’t feel like my place, and more like a hotel. After a while you just miss your own bed. You want to be able to do what you want, and no one be around to tell you no. Even having these thoughts made me feel as though I was being ungrateful to the Hendersons for allowing us to stay here, but I couldn’t help but miss my freedom.

When I opened the door, I was surprised to see it was Bennett. “You’re bringing me to work this morning?” I asked.

“I have a few errands to run. I thought you might want to take the ride with me before dropping you off. If you’d rather, I can bring you directly to your office,” he said.

I smiled. “I’d love a drive. I’m not used to being without my car.”

“You always have a driver at your disposal,” he said.

I chuckled as we headed down to his SUV. “That’s not the same.”

We headed in the direction away from my office, and it looked as though we were going to Alex and Ziva’s. They lived in a very nice part of Tabiq. You couldn’t beat the view. Of course, my old house had a view that wasn’t so bad either, just not as convenient to get to.

Don’t have that problem anymore.

Bennett wasn’t joking. He must have stopped at least five times at different places along the way. Zoey must have given him one heck of a list.

“I have just one more stop and then I’ll bring you to the office,” he said.

We’d been driving around for more than an hour. It might have been a better choice if I’d been dropped off first. Too late now.

He turned and headed back towards where we had come from, but instead of going into town again, he turned up a hill. I couldn’t think of anything up there that he’d need to do. There weren’t any businesses and hardly any homes at all. It was part of Tabiq that, for the most part, was untouched.

“Are you sure you know where you’re going,” I asked.

“I do.”

A few minutes later, Bennett pulled down a dirt road and for the first time, I got nervous. If it wasn’t Bennett driving, I’d worry a lot more, because this was a great place to dispose of a body.

He’s a friend. Not a foe.

One last turn and I saw a clearing and a new development. Then I saw Logan’s car. “I thought Logan was moving back to the U.S.”

“He will always travel back and forth, but not as much as he has been.” Bennett said.

That made sense. But when he pulled up closer to the house and parked I almost choked when a familiar red headed young man came out. What is Finn’s brother doing here?

He waved as he walked over and opened my car door. “Hello Reesa. It’s good to see you again. Finn is waiting for you inside.”

“Finn? Here? I thought he was working at the hospital,” I said. None of this was adding up.

“I will let him answer that.”

When I got out, he got in and Bennett drove away. I didn’t even have my laptop or my cell phone with me. I had to remind myself that I wasn’t being abandoned. Finn was inside. Everything was going to be okay.

I headed towards the house and opened the door. Looking inside, I saw that it really was a work in progress. The framework was done, but not all the walls were covered.
