Jasper was saying all the right things, but they all were based on if the surgery was a success. If I wasn’t able to walk, then I didn’t want him here. I wanted him to go back home and start over again. He’s just starting to live; I don’t want him to be tied down to taking care of me.
“Hate to give you bad news, but I don’t have a place, either. And from what Logan said, I’m going to be in the rehab center for weeks getting my strength back.”
The nurse returned and said, “It’s time to go down.”
The time had flown by since Jasper arrived. Now all I wished was to have a bit more of it.
He leaned over and kissed my forehead. “I love you, Alysa. Remember, I’ll be right here. And I’ll be apartment hunting while waiting.”
With his broken leg and my back, I smiled up at him and said, “Make sure it has an elevator.”
“In a few weeks, neither of us are going to need it. But I’ll keep it in mind.”
The nurse pulled my bed and wheeled me down the hallway. I was on my way to the operating room and had nothing on my mind except for Jasper.
He’s really here. He’s staying.
When I closed my eyes I thought, He loves me.
