I shook my head. “No. They never touched me. I…I don’t know what happened. I was walking earlier when they took me to see Ocalla. I know I felt my legs when I was sitting down in the chair.” The pain that I felt when I tipped it over. I must have pinched some nerve or something. “I must have fallen the wrong way when I fell over. Just give me a few minutes, and I’m sure it will pass.”

Stone hit his mic. “Get the chopper here now. Notify Logan we’re coming in with a thirty-year-old female with a spinal cord injury.”

I turned from Stone and looked at Jasper, who had tears in his eyes. With his full leg cast he couldn’t even bend down to sit with me. I reached my hand up to him and said, “I’m okay. Really I am.”

He wasn’t buying it. I didn’t blame him. Here I was trying to be the tough Marine for him, when really, on the inside, I was crying and scared to death.

A few minutes later the medic arrived, and I was loaded onto a stretcher and rushed to the chopper.

“Wait. Where is Jasper?” I asked before they closed the door.

“Stone will be driving him and Burke to the hospital,” the medic said.

“I want him with me,” I said firmly.

“LaHouse, it’s not possible. Not with his leg and the cast. There wouldn’t be enough room for us all,” he replied as he started an intravenous line on me.

“Why the IV?” I asked.

“You’re dehydrated. This will help you feel a bit better.”

The only thing that would make me feel better right now would be having Jasper close by. He needs to know that I love him, too.

The chopper lifted and I knew what I had to say would need to wait. It was more than just telling him that I love him. I needed to tell him who I really was. And it’s no financial advisor.
