My alarm goes off at two a.m. and it takes me a minute to remember why I set it.

Kayla.

Shutting off the alarm, I get out of bed. I have to check on her and I know she won't like being woken up. I head down the hall to the other side of the house. Her door is cracked open and the sight of her sprawled out on the bed greets me.

She’s wearing one of my shirts, which looks damn good on her. One leg is peeking out from under the covers and it's bare. Her legs are toned from those heels she wears, and I itch to run my hand along its length.

Dammit, I need to stop standing here like a creeper and check on her. Moving to the side of the bed, I kneel down in front of her.

"Kayla," I say softly, tucking some hair behind her ear. She doesn’t wake up, but she does stir.

"Wake up for me, Kayla," I say louder this time and run my hand down her arm.

She moves but doesn't wake up.

"Come on, City Girl, open those eyes," I joke.

This time she moans, and a moment later she cracks open one eye and looks at me.

"What's your name?" I ask.

"Kayla. You just said it. Are you sure you aren't the one with a concussion?"

"Where are you?" I continue running through the standard list.

She turns onto her back, sighing. "At some crazy doctor's house who insists on waking me up at," she pauses and looks at the clock on the nightstand, "two a.m."

"Do you know why I’m waking you up?"

"Because you’re a sadist?"

"Kayla..."

"Because I hit my head and have a teeny tiny concussion." She sits up.

"Whoa, what are you doing?" I grab her arm to stop her.

"Now I won't be able to get back to sleep and I refuse to lie here, tossing and turning."

"Come on, I’ll make you some tea. My mom swears it helps her sleep."

"You’re going to drug it, aren't you?"

I chuckle. "No, I'm a doctor, and not in the habit of drugging my patients. Go sit on the couch."

While I like her spunk, she really does need her rest, and hopefully, this tea will work. For the first time, I wish I had listened to my mom and gotten a tea kettle instead of heating water in the microwave.

Hopefully, she won't be able to tell the difference. Either way, the tea should help her. I set a glass of it on the end table next to where she is sitting on the couch and sit in the chair next to her.

"You really should try to get some more sleep."

"It took me a while to get to sleep as it was." She takes a sip of the tea and doesn’t spit it out, so that's a good sign.

"Why?"

"Not in my bed, and I’m at a stranger’s house. But mostly, my meeting with Jason and Nick. You know they thought I was some floozy sent to flirt with them in order to get the deal. It’s not the first time someone has assumed that, but still."
