Page 20 of Committed Cowboy

I get ready for dinner, nothing fancy just my usual attire, and then head to the living room to wait for her. She doesn't live too far from work, so I know she’ll be home any minute.

I'm scrolling my emails, making sure there isn't anything that can't wait when there’s a knock on the door.

Who the heck could it be? Her dad knows she's spending the weekend with me. It can’t be him, because he made us promise to stop by for lunch this weekend. Her friend, Becca, she just saw at work. A neighbor maybe?

Opening the door, I find the guy she was on a date with at the diner. What the hell is he doing here?

"What do you want?" I ask in a not so nice tone. One my momma would scold me over, but she isn't here, so I don't bother correcting it.

"I wanted to check on Kaylee. She's been dodging me and acting really weird. So, I wanted to make sure she was okay."

Just as he says this, Kaylee walks up. I know she heard him, because she looks from him to me, and then back at him, before plastering on her fake smile.

"Hey, Jason." She greets him.

"Kaylee. I just wanted to check on you."

"That's so sweet of you. I'm sorry about everything, but I've been really busy with work and all. And honestly, I just didn't feel it on our date."

Jason gives a dry chuckle.

"I understand that. I hope we can stay friends, for Becca's sake, but I don't want things to be weird," he says.

"Zero weirdness, I promise," Kaylee says.

He kisses her cheek and then leaves, and I stand there in shock, pissed beyond belief.

When she looks at me, she knows I'm pissed, too.

"What is wrong with you?" She asks, pushing her way inside her apartment.

I follow her in and close the door behind us.

"You didn't tell him I was your boyfriend? You gave him some bullshit excuse."

I stood there, waiting to be introduced and nothing. It's like I didn't mean anything to her, and what we had was a fling.

"Is that what you are? Because we never talked about it, and having that discussion in front of Jason, seemed inappropriate." She says, slipping off her heels and putting her bag away.

"So, what the hell am I to you? Just sex?"

Turning, I run my hand through my hair, and when she doesn't answer me, I have my answer. This isn't anything more to her. Of course, it's not. You can't have a relationship with a playboy, right? I grab my bag and walk out of there, not even bothering to listen to her calling my name behind me.

I get in my truck and head home. Stupid me for thinking she wanted me for anything more than to scratch an itch. To say she had the bad boy before she settled down with a guy like Jason.

Of all the people she could have used as a bad boy, why me? Why ruin our friendship? Having no answers, I drive straight to The Whiskey Whistler and ignore everyone, as I go straight for the bar.

My phone has gone off several times and looking at it, I can see several missed calls from Kaylee and several texts. Not answering them, I turn my phone off and order another whiskey.

I knew giving in and trying for something more was a bad idea. My idea of something more was the whole package. A girlfriend, a relationship, and eventually, a life together. Apparently, hers was only some sex, until something better came along.

I'm such an idiot.
