Chapter 1

Brynn

No one ever wakes up and thinks, ‘Today is the day I’m going to throw a kiwi at my ex boyfriend’s head. But yet, that’s exactly what happened, and I don’t regret a minute of it.

Farmer’s Market days are my favorite. I like to do the shopping for my Inn myself, talking with everyone to see what’s new in our small, little, beach town, and keep up on everyone. Recently, they added some craft booths, and there’s always something fun and interesting going on.

I’m fighting between taking my time and rushing back to The Inn, because today is the day Kade Markson checks into my best friend, Lin’s Sunrise Inn, which is next door to my Sunset Inn.

We run the Inn’s together. She runs Sunrise, and I run Sunset, just like our parents did. Only our parents never had a mega movie star rent out the whole Inn for two weeks, even if it’s off season.

So, after spending three days cleaning The Inn, and then checking on the suite he will be staying in, I welcomed the break today.

We can’t tell anyone in town either, but this is the biggest thing to happen, since well sadly, since our parents died in the boating accident five years ago.

I shake my head, trying to listen to the people talking around me and making sure no sign of Kade’s arrival has been leaked, but the talk is mostly of the storm coming up the coast, and how everyone is getting ready for it.

We had a really bad storm hit about five years ago, and ever since then, people take them a bit more seriously. Better to over prepare than to be unprepared again.

I stop at a booth and get some jam and pie filling that I know Lin will want to use in her baking. She makes breakfast for both Inns, and people rave about it constantly.

I’m getting ready to turn the corner, when the last voice I expected to hear, fills the air.

“My mom is on a kiwi kick, and she’s going to love these.” The masculine voice fills the air.

Jasper.

My ex-boyfriend who broke my heart. We had a plan, and when everything changed, he left for New York City anyway, leaving me here. Somehow, he blames Lin for not taking the entire burden herself and pushing me to go with him. I honestly don’t know, because the fight we had didn’t make much sense. Then, my parents died, and I just stopped trying.

He’s been back to our small-town of Seaview a few times. We are on Hummingbird Island off the coast of North Carolina, and since there’s only one bridge on and off the island, I guess it’s too small for him. He never stays long, even after his father’s funeral last year.

I try to back up and get away from him, but luck isn’t on my side today. He turns his head and sees me, and his smile drops. How is it possible this man looks even sexier today then he did the day we broke up? It’s just not fair.

His square jaw has some stubble on it, and his dark, brown hair is a bit longer with some curl, and in the light, there are some red highlights in it. Of course, I’m in comfy clothes with my hair thrown up in a bun and no makeup on.

“Hello, Brynn.” He says in a somewhat friendly tone.

This is a small-town and gossip is gold here, so of course, everyone around us freezes to watch what happens next. Then, they will run and tell anyone who wasn’t here to witness what happened, and it will be the talk of the town all day.

Great.

“Jasper.” I nod at him, and then pretend to look at the stand next to me.

“You’re doing a shit job at ignoring me.” He chuckles.

“I’m not ignoring you. I’m shopping.”

“You’re staring at mushrooms, and you’re allergic to them.” He says.

I finally focus on the stand in front of me, and he’s right. Damn him.

I sigh and turn to him.

“What are you doing here in our tiny town? Shouldn’t you be in New York?” I snap.

“My mom needed help this season with the restaurants, since my dad died, and she begged me to come back. So, I did.” He shrugs.

“Oh, so that actually works? Someone needs you, and you come back. Funny, you had a different reaction, when I needed you.”
