I like days like this when our friends are here, and I see the joy in my children. They’re happier now than they’ve ever been, and I can’t see where they’re missing anything. I’d been tempted to keep Melinda away from the older ones, but Samantah had convinced me to let her see them as long as it was here where we could keep an eye on her before she did something crazy like run with them as she’d threatened.

I can’t say that I’m unhappy that she’d reneged and we haven’t seen or heard from her in almost a year. Our oldest was about to turn twelve, and our youngest two were three, as I looked around the yard for that head of hair that glistens in the afternoon light I got that feeling again. It was time.

She was standing with a group of her friends, wine cooler in hand, and I grinned at my own inner thoughts. She must’ve been able to enjoy maybe five of those things in the time we’ve been married because she doesn’t take even a sip when she’s with child. This one just might be the last for a while if I have my way.

I sipped my beer and watched her as she laughed and nodded at something one of the ladies said, and as if feeling my eyes on her, she turned her head my way. I winked at her and watched her face heat up as she rubbed her legs together. She got the message loud and clear.

The End
