I wanted to sit down and watch the door, watch her enter. Hillside Investment had become gossip central of late, and it seemed to have got word of my obsession with Miss Wilkinson, and thought I was losing my touch. I’d become a pushover. Not likely, but I wasn’t scared to admit I’d calmed my snappish attitude at times. The waitress led me to the corner of the back room and my heart beat an extra beat. There sat in the corner was Sutton.

“Hi, you look beautiful.” I leaned over and kissed her cheek, before I took a seat opposite her. “Am I late?” I asked.

“No, I’m just early,” Sutton quipped, as the waitress coughed to the side of us.

“The best whisky you have, double. Sutton?” I asked, as I dared reach out for one of her hands that held a menu and covered it with mine. My fingers jolted back with the sudden tingle that spread up my arm as my gaze snapped up, unable to comprehend what just happened. All I know is I wanted more. I wanted that spark to spread like a wildfire through my veins and connect the two of us as one.

“A large red wine please, sweet if you’ve got it.”

I was glad once the waitress had served our drinks and taken our food orders. I was fed up with the constant interruptions and wanted the chance to talk. It felt like every time I opened my mouth and started to get into something deep with Sutton, someone was by our side again and I could tell I wasn’t the only one frustrated by the fact.

“Tate,” Sutton asked nervously as she took a sip of her drink, “I came to talk. I know you think you’re all in, but I just don’t know how this can work. How can I give the player a chance?”

“Sutton, listen.” I grabbed her wrist, pulled it to my lips and left a single kiss there before I let my thumb circle over her pulse. “I know you’re scared. Fuck, I know that Grey hurt you badly.”

“Oh, I see, you’ve been given the scoop by Asher then?” She pulled back and folded her arms across her chest and frowned. “I’m sick of you going to my fucking brother, Tate.”

“No, well yes. I don’t know,” I mumbled in confusion as I ran my hands through my hair. “I saw what Grey was like with you that night. I saw the way you backed off and felt intimidated – hurt even – by the guy. He fucking rubbed his wife in your face,” I snarled as I reached back for Sutton’s hand and held it tightly. Her eyes widened in shock at my admittance. “Yes, Asher may have told me a few things but nothing I couldn’t have seen with my own eyes because Sutton, understand this, I don’t want Asher to tell me about your past. I want you to tell me.”

“Tate…” Sutton whispered. “I want to tell you, but not here.” She licked her lips before she squeezed my hand. “Can we go somewhere quiet?”

Time stood still as the words sank in. I didn’t want to push this, but she’d asked for somewhere quiet. How was I to refuse? But was this a power game? I needed Sutton to trust me before I pushed her.

“Sutton, you have to tell me where you want to go. I know you may have expected the cocky, arrogant man you know to whisk you off your feet and demand but…” I took a deep breath and let out a growl as I leaned forward. “It’s taking all my control to not snap the rubber band because once I do, Sutton. I won’t stop. You’ll be mine.”

I watched Sutton push her chair back and stand up as I threw enough money to cover the bill on the table and stood up myself. I followed behind as we left the restaurant, watching her hips sway back and forth. She hailed a taxi while I watched her ass, my cock throbbing, unsure what exactly was going through Sutton’s mind.

“Tate, are you getting in?” Sutton asked, as she opened the door of the black taxi. She scooted across and I slid in, uncertain why as our apartments were in opposite directions.

“Where to, Miss?” the driver asked, as he looked at the pair of us in the rear-view mirror.

“Oh, sorry,” she replied nervously as she grabbed my thigh and squeezed hard, making my cock twitch. “The gentleman will be giving directions to his place.”

Damn it. Fuck. I was not expecting that as I gazed into her eyes and ran my finger down her cheek. “Sutton, are you sure?”

“I am.”

I reeled off the address to the driver and turned to study Sutton. Was she really ready to let me in and take a risk? We pulled up outside my apartment block and Sutton started to panic as I got out of the vehicle.

“Tate. I can’t,” Sutton uttered as she took a shaky deep breath and stared up at the building. “I… this place. Tate. I’m sorry,” she mumbled as she pulled her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them and closed her eyes. Her body started to shake and the sobbed noise, she fought so hard to reign in, was becoming more audible as she forced out the words, “I need to get out of here. Now! Just drive.”

“Sutton,” I shouted. “Sutton!” I yelled as the taxi drove away.

What the hell had made her freak out in those few moments between getting in the taxi and arriving at mine? I don’t know, but Sutton Wilkinson, you can run, but you can’t hide.

Chapter11

Sutton

“Asher, Asher! Where are you?” I screamed as I opened the door of the apartment and entered. The tears started to flow down my cheeks as I collapsed on my knees in the entrance of the doorway and attempted to calm my ragged breaths. “Asher, I mean it, you better get out here, now! If you have a girl in there with you...”

“Hold up one second. Sutton, what… What’s the matter?” he asked, concerned as he walked out of his room, looking at the buttons as he did his shirt up without a care in the world. Until he gazed up and saw me. Within moments he was by my side. I felt his arms as they wrapped around me. “Seriously, what’s all the commotion about? I thought you were with…”

“Tate,” I finished. “I was and then I ended up outside his apartment block. “Do you know where that is Asher? You could’ve fucking warned me.”

I watched him as he walked over to the sofa. When he sat and slid down the back and covered his face.

“How could I have brought that up, honestly? I thought you’d have gone elsewhere,” he admitted as he removed his hands and looked up at me.
