Olivia turned to her plate and picked up a fork as well. “This might work. But where am I to look on the ride tomorrow?”
“Ahead of you? At the trees, the sun, the clouds. Anywhere. And continue doing so until you feel comfortable around him.”
Olivia nodded and proceeded to eat.
“All right, what is next on your list of questions?” Jarvis prompted.
Olivia giggled. Then she turned to Jarvis, and her eyes widened. “Oh, blast, I did it wrong.”
She giggled again, then touched his arm. She removed her hand as quickly as if his sleeve was on fire and burst into laughter, covering her face with both hands.
What in the world is going on?
Jarvis chuckled, but Olivia didn’t seem able to control herself anymore. Her laughter was infectious, so a moment later, Jarvis was roaring with laughter beside her.
They were drawing the gazes of the other guests, including Bradshaw. Well, at least they’d gotten his attention.
“Oh, I am so sorry!” Olivia said, trying to catch her breath. “I am useless at this.”
“What happened?” Jarvis asked, still wheezing with laughter.
“I did it all wrong!”
“What in the world were you trying to do?”
“Well, Caroline said to laugh, touch, and cover my mouth, and I did it in exactly this order, but it turned out wrong.”
Jarvis just shook his head. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Olivia fanned her burning cheeks. “Let us start from the beginning, shall we?”
“Very well.”
Olivia took a deep breath, picked up her fork again, and chewed thoughtfully. She snort-laughed and covered her mouth again. “Oh, Lord, I am hopeless. I can’t seem to concentrate.”
“All right.” Jarvis readjusted the napkin on his lap. “I am not your friend, Jarvis, the giggle inducer—”
Olivia laughed even harder.
“Shh! I am your beloved Bradshaw.”
Now it was Olivia’s time to shush him. “Someone will hear.”
“But it did get you to stop laughing.”
“Oh, Lord.” Olivia wiped her eyes. “Right, right. You’re not Jarvis; you’re Bradshaw. All right.” She cleared her throat again and looked at him from beneath her lashes.
That was actually good. She looked coy and damn enticing. Of course, she always looked enticing to him, even with her hair all winded, her old gown all rumpled and smelling like twenty different perfumes.
“Will you—pass me some bread rolls?” Olivia chuckled again, shaking in laughter.
“Oh, Lord.” Jarvis shook his head. “Youarehopeless in this.”
“I told you!” Olivia wiped at her eyes and drew a few long breaths to calm down.
“Did Lady Caroline teach you anything else? Because it seems like she didn’t help at all.”
“She told me to ask many questions about him. And so did you. To keep him talking.”
