Her gaze strayed across the room where Tillie sat with Juliet on one side and Lord Rangeley on the other. He listened attentively as her sister gave a rousing lecture on bird migration.
Perhaps she didn’t wish to discuss birds.
But she did want to speak with confidence.
Her mother was now in a full planning frenzy as she bounced back and forth from discussing the details of Tillie’s wedding and the preparations she planned to make for Millie’s first season.
Millie stopped listening as she looked at Lord Rangeley once again.
That’s when she noticed that he’d placed the pale pink rose that he’d given to her in his jacket pocket. Still in full bloom, it added a touch of color to his visage and reminded Millie of their conversation in the garden. A conversation that had been about important things like his earldom and the practices he was using to save it.
She might need to keep her distance from Rangeley but she also needed to find more people who would talk to her like that.
She wished to marry a man who wanted more than just a pretty woman on his arm.
