He tore his lips from hers, turned and headed to the door before he couldn’t leave her at all. “Please, for the love of God, put some clothes on, woman.” She was still wearing only his thermal and nothing else.
Her giggles followed him out the door.
He stopped in the driveway when Chase called out from the side yard. “Looks like you had a good morning.”
Hunt groaned. He knew his brothers had to have seen him with Cyn. “Jealous?” he tossed out, not wanting to say anything that would have them razzing him even more.
Chase chuckled but his expression said it all. “Nope.”
“Fuck you both,” Max grumbled. Apparently he’d woken up alone.
Chase grinned at Hunt again. “Just happy to see you happy, man.”
“Keep her safe and I will be the happiest man alive.”
His brothers both gave him a firm nod.
Hunt drove to the station, his gut in a knot that wouldn’t unravel until he was back with Cyn again and she was safe and sound and in his arms.
Chapter Sixteen
Hunt walked into the quiet station and smiled at the receptionist. “Morning, Marcy. Is William over his cold yet?” She had the cutest chubby toddler.
She smiled at him. “He’s feeling better and finally slept through the night again last night.”
He continued past her to his office. “Good to hear.”
“How’s your girlfriend? Is she still in the hospital?”
Hunt stopped and turned to Marcy. He didn’t feel the need to correct her on the girlfriend thing. He and Cyn were... getting there. It felt like they were there. He didn’t want to presume. But after what they’d shared last night, yeah, it felt right to have some claim to her. “Cyn’s feeling better. The side effects of the hypothermia seem to have subsided, though we’ll see how she does today. Thanks for asking.”
“It was brave what she did, going into the water like that. If it was someone I loved... I’d want to know one way or another if they were in that car.”
He nodded and turned back toward the office, not wanting to let the fear and memories of waiting those four minutes and twelve seconds for her to come outof that water. Not to mention the other couple minutes he had to give her CPR. He shook off the thoughts, dropped into the seat behind his desk and booted up his computer.
He’d been trying to compile information from all the home invasions and break-ins in Willow Fork and the surrounding towns but Cyn had distracted him in the best way this morning from finishing his task.
He grinned at the memory of her shaking her finger at him about his uniform and wearing his reading glasses.
Officer Reid leaned against the doorframe. “I bet Cyn put that grin on your face.”
Hunt went perfectly still and stared at his friend and fellow officer.
“Have you counted the butterfly tattoos? All twenty-two of them.”
He’d kissed all twenty-sixof them last night.
“Did you look closely at them? They’ve got the names of all her favorite lovers in the wings.”
“You shouldn’t talk about things you know nothing about.” He eyed Reid. “You’ve never seen all her tattoos, despite the stories you like to tell about being with her. We both know you’ve never been with her.”
“If she said otherwise, she’s lying.”
“Is it really that easy for you, and I’ll bet a lot of other guys in town, to pretend you slept with her, and then call her a liar when she says she didn’t sleep with you?”
“The girl likes to fuck.”
“So does most everyone. That doesn’t mean you were with her.”
