Sweat trickled from his armpits down his sides. “You said you did,” he shot back.

Officer Reid shook his head. “No. I never did. So why don’t you tell me how you knew it was in a fast-moving river that could have swept them away.”

His lawyer looked at him.

He blurted out the first thing that came to mind. “I guessed. I assumed. That’s all. I didn’t do anything to them. You need to find them.”

His lawyer put his hand on his arm. “Don’t say anything more.”

“If your client won’t help himself and tell us what he really knows, then the DA is going to go after the maximum penalty for the charges coming his way. If he tells us where they are, maybe that helps his case.”

“Are you charging my client?”

Officer Reid stared at him while Rad held his breath. “Not at this time. But I would advise your client to come clean about what he knows and tell us where Angela and Lana are before it’s too late and the full weight of the law comes crashing down on him.”

“My client has been advised.”

“I’m sure we’ll speak again soon, Mr. Harmon.”

“So I’m free to go?”

“Yes. Just remember, it’s a small town. Angela and Cyn are well regarded. And a missing infant... Well, that’s just unthinkable. Everyone will be waiting for their safe return. And watching your every move.”

Rad hated Officer Reid.

He stood and walked out without looking back and got into his truck.

His lawyer knocked on his window. “We need to talk.”

“Tomorrow.” He turned on the truck, backed out of the parking space and drove out of the police station lot, hoping he didn’t have to ever go back there and knowing Hunt wouldn’t stop coming for him.

Not now.

His life was royally fucked. He wouldn’t be able to go anywhere without this hanging over his head.

He slammed his hand on the steering wheel several times until his palm ached and the rush of adrenaline and rage washed through him.

“Fucking Hunt!” He pulled his phone out of his back pocket and made the call with vengeance in mind.

“Cyn nearly died today because of you.” Rage filled Hunt’s voice, but it was nothing compared to how Rad felt.

“We used to be friends. Now you’re coming after me and ruining my life. I’m going to make you pay, and I’m going to use her to do it.”

Chapter Thirteen

Hunt pulled into his driveway at dusk with Cyn in the passenger seat beside him. It took longer than expected to get her out of the hospital because she’d experienced some dizziness and cognitive issues that cleared up the longer she was awake, but the doctor ran more tests and scans to be sure everything was okay, especially with the concussion. He’d waited in her room, pacing like a caged animal, hoping everything was all right.

“I told you to take me home.”

He glanced over at her, looking so beautiful in a long blue dress that skimmed her curves and looked soft and comfortable. And it didn’t press on the stitches running down her shin.

“You shouldn’t be alone.”

“Shelby volunteered to stay with me.”

He narrowed his gaze. “I thought you wanted to come here with me.”

“You’re the one who looks like you’d rather me not be here.”
