She nodded, then ducked into the restroom.

After a moment, Garrison walked up to stand beside him. “Any luck?”

Trent shook his head. “Nope. Girl has some ugly wounds, and I don’t think she’s quite ready to move past them.”

Garrison sighed. “I get it. Don’t like it, but I get it.” He peered at the closed door. “Fuck, that sucks. Didn’t think I’d find a girl who reacted so well.”

“Yeah,” Trent agreed, cursing the situation.

“Maybe she’ll come back,” Garrison said.

“Maybe.”

They waited for another minute until Trent frowned. It had been a while…

He knocked on the door, silence coming back. “Fox?”

Nothing.

He twisted the handle, finding it locked.

The security guard looked their way, and Trent waved him over. The man, Lucas, was a sweetheart who had worked there for years, and who knew Trent well.

“A girl went in there a few minutes ago, but she isn’t answering now,” Trent explained.

Lucas knocked. “Miss? You okay?”

Nothing.

Lucas took keys from his belt and slid them into the lock.

Trent cursed himself for letting her out of his sight. It felt like a rookie mistake. What if she’d fallen? What if she’d hit her head because she wasn’t steady on her feet? What if she’d gotten hurt because he hadn’t taken care of her like he was supposed to?

Lucas opened the door, and the bathroom was empty. The door on the other side, the one used for people wanted to leave when they felt uncomfortable, an emergency exit, was open.

His fox had run off.
