I fumbled over my words, stalking toward Darren. “What do you mean, why not? Because it’s dangerous, duh. Think about Jack. What if someone decides to get to Antoine through her or one of us? What then?”
“And if he doesn’t take the position then we could end up with someone even worse that might decide that we are too much of a threat to let live,” Darren explained, placing his hands on either side of my face. “Would you really want to take that chance?”
I placed my hands over his and closed my eyes. So much had happened since I first started this job. I’d lost people and gained people all to get to this point in my life and I was scared. So scared to lose the very people who had made my life worth living and the light of my life. Jack. Oh, little Jack. I would just die if something happened to her.
“No, I can’t take that chance.” I blew out a breath and Darren kissed me on the forehead.
“That’s our girl.”
I shifted away from Darren to look at Antoine. “Well, if we’re going to do this then let’s do this right.” I placed my hands on hips and stepped toward Antoine. “Get the guys together, we’re going to need a plan. We need Rayne to find out everything he can about the other candidates,” I said thinking out loud as I started toward the basement door. “Marcus could do some recon with the twins, make sure that we have the upper hand —” I paused at the doorway and looked back at the guys with a frown. “Are you coming or what? We got work to do.”
