I darted for the door. Caleb blocked my way. The only other way out was through the bathroom and even then, I didn't think that I could get through the tiny hole in the window.
Still, I had to try.
I ran into the bathroom, slamming the door behind me, locking it for good measure. Though, I knew it was pointless. I searched around the bathroom for something that I could use against him. The only thing that was in here was the box of blood that Darren had given me and that wasn't going to do anything, not to another vampire anyway.
In this instance, I wish I wasn't pregnant. Out of this entire time there had only been a few times that I had been upset about the prospect of having a child but now it was becoming an overwhelming health hazard.
If I wasn't pregnant then I could have taken out Caleb. If I wasn’t pregnant then I wouldn’t even be here in the first place.
What the fuck, what does it matter? I'm pregnant, there's nothing I could do about it now. I just had to suck it up and figure this out on my own.
Caleb banged at the door. “Come out of there, don't make me break it down. Tuma will be very cross with me if I break the door.”
“Too damn bad,” I shouted back. I wished Tuma had more of a concern for me than the status of an inanimate object.
He banged on the door a few more times and it cracked.
For a moment, I thought that it was all over. That this was the moment that I was going to die and my baby was going to die and I'd never get to see it be born. I’d never see its cute little face. I’d never get to see its little fingers curling around my own. I’d never get to know what the baby's gender was or to pick out a name.
My fingers curled around the stake in my hand tightly, my back straightening. No, I wasn't going to go down without a fight. This was it. It was either me or Caleb and I was determined it wasn't going to be me.
Caleb's foot shot through the door and half of the door ended up littered across the floor. I braced myself to rush at him, hoping to get him while he was stuck in the door fragments. Before I could reach him, he was jerked out of the wood of the door and pulled back into the bedroom. There was the telltale sound of a slice and then something hit the floor with a thud.
I waited in the bathroom, holding my breath as I waited for whoever the newest enemy was to descend on me. Then a familiar face poked through the hole in the door.
Vincent.
He smiled, looking me over, his eyes landing on my large belly. “Would you look at that? This is quite a surprise.”
I gave a nervous laugh, waving slightly but not putting down the stake. “Oh, hey fancy meeting you here.”
“Do you want to open the door,” Vincent asked, nodding his head towards the doorknob a few inches away from him, “or should I?”
“No, no,” I shook him off, heading for the door. “I'll come out. I'll come out.” I didn't want to be backed into a corner any longer than I had been. At least, faced with my frenemy I had a chance of getting away.
Vincent moved away from the door and I unlocked it, pushing what remained of it out of the way. It kind of fell sideways against the wall with a cracking sound.
I stepped into the bedroom and my eyes immediately found Caleb's body lying on the floor, his head rolling around a few feet away. Mizuki was standing nearby cleaning her sword off with a rag. While Tristan stood close behind her.
Mizuki took one look at my pregnant belly and arched her brow.
Tristan cried out, “Holy shit you're pregnant. How the fuck did that happen?”
I gave a weak smile. “Oh, you know, birds and the bees and all that.”
“Yes,” Vincent answered with a curious look. “I'd be interested to know as well. As far as we were aware vampires can't procreate.”
I shrugged. “Probably not one of theirs.”
“Ah,” Tristan bobbed his head with a smirk. “I bet it rubs them raw to find out that their little human servant was the one that knocks you up where they couldn't?”
I scowled at the man. “No, they're fine with it.”
Vincent hummed and glanced at his underlings and then back to me. “You know, I was going to see if you would like to rejoin our little crusade against rogue vampires but it seems as if you will be out of commission for a little while longer. However...”
I didn't like where this was going.
“I would like to propose a different agreement.” Vincent shifted closer to me with a twinkle in his eye. “To ensure the safety of your men and yourself, I would like to have your child as my own.”
