Chapter 17
Piper
Isat there staringat the box that Darren had left me. It'd been two days and I couldn't bring myself to open it. Though, he had told me what was in it.
The blood of each one of my vampires.
But what was I supposed to do with it? I couldn't just pick an order and drink them one by one and hope that they were sleeping at that time.
I guess I could probably mix them up and just grab one at random, drink it, go to sleep, hope for the best? Then it would be kind of like a game. Who would I be banging tonight?
I sighed and leaned back on the couch.
Or maybe I should go to bed like normal and wait for Antoine to help me out. Maybe we could make up a schedule of some sorts.
However, twenty-four hours was not long enough of a time to see Darren.
I thought about going to Tuma to see about getting a longer extension or to see if one of the other guys could come and visit me but based on the way that Agnes was acting, I wasn't quite sure now was a good time.
I shot a curious look at her. Watching television as normal.
It was so frustrating. No one would tell me what was going on.
Every day, I would go about my normal routine: wake up, have breakfast with Agnes, maybe watch a little bit of TV, chat a little bit about her life or about my life. She asked me a little bit about Darren and how things were going and if I enjoyed my time with him. I had a feeling she wanted me to go into more detail. A little bit too personal for my taste but honestly, I had to talk to someone and Agnes seemed more on my side than on any of the vampire council sides.
So, I was starting to slowly yet hesitantly trust her. I'm not sure the trust was two ways.
Sometimes she'd look at me like what the hell was she doing here. Other times she seemed perfectly happy to be spending time with me rather than out scurrying about with the rest of the minions.
“So, what's going on?” I asked Agnes one day.
“What do you mean?'' she asked, looking at me briefly before turning back to her medical comedy show.
I grabbed the remote from her and turned the TV off. Sitting on the coffee table in front of her, I grabbed her hands. “You know exactly what I'm talking about. Why is everybody tiptoeing around me. Why won’t anyone tell me what's going on?”
Agnes hesitated.
“Come on,'' I urged her, squeezing her hands tightly. “I thought we were friends, why can't you tell me? I just want what's best for my baby and if I'm in trouble, or our lives are in danger I should know, don’t you think?”
Agnes sighed and reluctantly turned to face me. “All right fine, there's something going on but you didn't hear it from me. Your vampires are making a big old fuss about wanting to see you and demanding things from the council that they don't want to do right now.”
“What kind of things?”
“Oh,” she breathed out, “you know. They want you to be let go. They want to be able to protect you themselves and they don't think the council is capable of doing it anymore." Agnes shook her head. “I don't know, my orders haven't changed. I'm supposed to stay with you, take care of you, make sure you're happy, give you companionship, and be here in case something happens with the baby.” She arched her brow. “Nothing's happened with the baby, right?”
I placed my hand on my growing belly. “No, things are fine. Wow!” I started, staring down at my belly for a second.
What was that?” Agnes asked with a concerned look on her face.
“I think the baby just kicked. Here, feel it.” I grabbed Agnes's hand and placed it over where mine was pressing onto my stomach.
After a few moments, I thought nothing was going to happen and then there it was. Like a tiny little burp.
“Why yes,” Agnes smiled brightly. “You've got quite the energetic baby going on in there. Have you thought about names?”
I frowned. “No, I haven’t. I don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet, so how am I supposed to know what name to call it?”
“Well, we can always find out.”
