“Of course, I do.” I pushed my smile hard until it hurt. “For starters, you’re way older than me and isn’t a mom supposed to be the older one?”
Odette frowned, her little brow furrowing in thought. “Oh, yeah.” Then giggled. “Then I can be your mommy.”
I opened my mouth to find a reason why she shouldn’t be.
“Odette. That’s enough.”
Saved by the vampire.
Now wasn’t that getting old.
Caleb stepped into the courtyard. “It’s time for bed.”
The sun was beginning to rise. The light touched the top of the building on the west side. I hadn’t realized it was getting so late. Or rather early.
“But Caleb, I want to play some more.” Odette stomped her foot on the ground, her tiny fingers curled into fists.
Caleb’s expression didn’t change at all as he calmly stood by the doorway. “Odette, you know it’s past your bedtime. Aren’t you tired?”
Odette paused and then spun around and jumped back into the window. “Good night, Piper!”
I stiffened and then called back, “Night.”
My gaze shifted back to where Caleb stood. He gave me a once over and then nodded before turning on his heels and leaving.
“Maybe I should have just stayed in my room.” I said out loud.
“Ain’t that the fucking truth.”
I snorted and smirked at the human servant. “Oh, that makes you finally speak up?” I shook my head and started for the door. “Come on, chatterbox. Let’s get out of here.”
