“It’s not with us,” Skylar lied before I could say anything.

“That’s smart,” Becca said. “But I do hope it’s safe.”

“It is,” Skylar said.

“We should get going. Thank you,” I said.

“Good luck,” Becca said.

“You know where to find us when shit hits the fan,” Sam added. “Remember the show down with the Mountain Pack?”

I chuckled. “I sure hope it doesn’t get that bad.”

Skylar slipped her hand in mine. “We should go.”

I walked out of the crypt with my mate, her touch making me feel calmer. We had direction, we had a spell. We were so close to destroying that stone.

We stepped out into the setting sun. The headstones cast long shadows over the grass. This was a peaceful place, but under the guise of the protective magic, there was a feeling of danger lurking. As if the memories of the long ago war hung in the air itself or seeped into the earth.

“Ready for the bad news?” Skylar asked.

I stopped walking. “What bad news?”

“We need two demons to make the spell work,” she said. “Like some kind of fail safe.”

My brow furrowed. “What about you?”

“Well, I guess we’ll find out if my demon half is good for something. If I’m not enough, we’re back to where we started. With a stone we can’t destroy.”
