“Oh, Xander and Sam used to fuck,” Kate said.
“That was a long time ago,” Sam said. “I’m sure he’s forgotten all about me by now.”
“It wasn’t that long ago,” Becca said under her breath.
“We dated when we were younger,” Xander confirmed. “But yes, it was a long time ago.”
“You look great, though, Zan.” Sam batted her eyelashes.
I rolled my eyes. She was trying way too hard. “We get it, you’re not over him but we don’t have time for that right now.”
Sam scoffed. “We’re the ones who agreed to help you.”
“That’s enough,” Xander said. “We’ve got demons on our trail. They’re tracking Skylar. We have to get this figured out sooner rather than later.”
“Tracking her likely because she is one of them,” Sam said. “I’m surprised you were able to get through the barrier.”
“She’s only half. The magic isn’t strong enough to prevent half demons anymore,” Becca said.
“I’m sure you can feel it, right?” Becca said. “The magic that keeps demons away can’t feel comfortable for you.”
“How do you all know so much about me?” I turned to Xander.
“I only said we needed help translating demonic. They’re reading you to get the rest.”
I shivered. While some supernaturals, like me, could get a read on what species those around us were, it wasn’t a common trait. All I could hope for was that they could read what was inside my head. Though, I supposed if that was possible, they’d have said something because I was not thinking kindly about Xander’s ex.
She was still staring at him, as if watching him was going to be enough to get him to take her back. If it wasn’t pissing me off so much, I might have felt sorry for her.
In reality, I wanted to punch her in the face and tell her to back off. Xander was mine.
My eyes widened at the thought. I hadn’t meant to go there. I kept telling myself that I was still figuring things out. But if it came down to claiming him now or letting Red have a go at him, I was going to lean into our bond.
I wanted him.
“Can I see the document?” Becca said, breaking me from my thoughts.
My cheeks felt hot and I shook myself from the realization.Xander was my mate and I wanted to complete the bond.Holy shit, where had that come from?
Whatever brought me to that decision was going to have to wait. We had demons chasing us and I wanted to avoid another run in with them.
I handed the book to Becca and she walked to a coffee table at the center of the room. The other mages followed and all four of them settled in around the table on their knees.
“We’ll need silence to perform the spell,” Becca said.
“What spell is she talking about?” I whispered to Xander.
“Translation spell,” he said. “They might be able to read it and find out what it says about destroying the stone.”
