Since I was marrying into a family even deadlier than my own, she would face double-danger being associated with me. Therefore, I wouldn’t blame her if she were to run as far away from me as possible. If we survived this, our friendship would likely come to an end.

Our loud yells mingled with the screeching tires as we were tossed across the back seat when Khane made a sharp turn and another and another. The hands and arms we didn’t have clinging to each other flailed about while we fought being tossed like a pair of loose marbles. By the time we were on the smooth highway again, we were battered and freaked out. The roaring base of Khane’s gun blast had stopped, and I prayed it meant we were out of danger.

“Open up and be ready as soon as I get rid of these assholes,” Khane said to someone. There was no return answer or even a voice reply, but the individual must have acknowledged him.

More sharp swerves and a body shaking jerk was coupled with an ear-splitting crack of metal. The crash had lifted our bodies off the seat before I was slung into the door panel with Patrena’s body colliding into mine and adding more weight to the impact. It hurt like hell but I was too amped up to care and prayed we had knocked the other vehicle off the highway.

After a long stretch of straight road and the sound of the revved engine, the notion that we were moving up a steep incline took ahold before the truck came to a screeching halt.

Our free hands went to the back of the seat to brace us against the momentum of the quick stop. Khane cut the engine, plunging us into a soundless tomb where only our harsh breathing signified the presence of life.

Although my eyes were tightly closed, I sensed that we were in a confined space. There was no sound, and the air had gotten tighter. Were we afloat, moving but not on our own?

“You can get up now,” Khane called back. We lifted our heads with caution, blinking, and unsure of our new surroundings. I flinched as I rose, expecting more bullets to come at us.

Were we safe now?
