This was not what she expected, though.

“Okay, so you want a baby, and you want me to carry it.” Kristie frowned. “Something like a surrogate, then?”

Something close to relief fluttered across Tyler’s face.

“That’s it. A surrogate.”

“Why me? Why would you pick me?”

Tyler sighed.

“Could you just say yes? It’s just one word.”

“Tyler, are you listening to yourself? You’re asking me to do something life-changing for me. Both in body and emotionally. I think I deserve to know why you’re asking me.” She held up a hand as Tyler opened his mouth. “And don’t say something like I should be flattered to have you want me for something like this. That’s not going to fly.”

“I wasn’t going to say that.” Tyler rubbed the back of his neck. Was he looking sheepish? “It’s because I trust you. I have problems trusting people outside of work, as you know. I trust you to do something so monumental for me, and that you wouldn’t screw me over. You’ve got integrity, and you’re compassionate. I know you would always have my best interests at heart.”

Kristie didn’t know what to say to that. Tyler trusted her? That was a surprise. She knew from her brother that Tyler was a bit closed-off from his teammates since coming to play for Middlesex, but she expected that when starting with a new county and a new contract. To hear that he trusted her to be his surrogate…it was a little bewildering.

She still couldn’t get her head around it. This had to be a dream. Surely, he wouldn’t have just said that.

“I see I’ve left you speechless,” Tyler commented with a slight smile. “I’m not surprised.”

“I…I don’t know what to say.” Kristie’s voice was trembling. She cleared her throat. “You can’t expect me to give you an answer right now, do you? I don’t know if I can give a definitive answer after having that sprung on me.”

“You want time to think about it.”

“Yes, I do.”

For a moment, Tyler stared at her. Then he nodded and slid off the massage table, picking up his t-shirt.

“Okay. I’ll leave you to think about it.” He put his shirt on, Kristie trying not to stare as the muscles shifted with his arms rising up. “But I’ll be expecting an answer soon. We do have things to work out, and I don’t want to leave it too long.” He hesitated, giving her a look that made Kristie’s pussy clench to the point she had to fight back a whimper. “See you later, Kristie.”

He left, closing the door behind him. Kristie’s legs wobbled, and she staggered to her desk, sagging into her chair. God, what had just happened? This had to be someone messing with her. But this wasn’t April Fools Day. This was the middle of July. And Tyler looked very serious about it.

He wanted her to carry his kid. Kristie wondered if her heart had forgotten to stop beating for a while, because it felt like it was making her lightheaded with the increased rate it was pounding.

“Kristie?”

Kristie was barely aware of anyone else being in the room until someone touched her shoulder. Jumping, she almost fell off her chair with a gasp. Then she looked up to see the tall black woman standing over her. It took a moment before she remembered her name.

“Shauna? I didn’t hear you come in.”

“Obviously. You were sitting there staring into the distance like you had just seen a ghost.” Shauna McCullough peered at her friend curiously. “Are you okay? Did something happen between you and Tyler?”

“What?” Kristie sat up. “Why would you think that?”

“Because I just saw him leave. And you always look a bit shell shocked after you’ve treated him.” Shauna raised an eyebrow. “Although it’s a bit more than shell shock right now. What happened?”

For a second, Kristie wanted to tell her friend what had just happened. She needed someone to talk to about the decision she had to make. It was going to be life-changing, after all, and Kristie knew she needed support. But she had a feeling that Shauna would go to her brother and tell him what Tyler was up to. Steve was rather over-protective of her, which was incredibly frustrating. God only knew what he would do to Tyler if he found out what his teammate wanted.

Shauna was Kristie’s best friend, but she also had a crush on Steve. Even if Kristie kept this quiet, Shauna wouldn’t. It was embarrassing to know that she didn’t completely trust her friend, but Kristie needed to think things over on her own.

“Nothing, really,” she mumbled. “No more than usual, anyway.”

Shauna giggled.

“Honestly, your crush on Tyler is quite cute. Why don’t you just tell him?”
