You notice the strings
That take it all away.
A lover’s love
When it finally appears
Is too dangerous to be trusted,
As foreign as a feast
Where every taste is toxic.
And if it’s real
How could you be worthy of so much
When you’ve lived in starvation so long
And been told you have it all?

bonus epilogue
Preston Darling
As I sit in a gridlock of traffic, my impatience grows. I’ve already lost so much time. I let her go two and a half years ago, and once again after that. This time, my resolve is strong. I won’t let her go.
It doesn’t matter what she wants. She’ll see it’s the right thing once it’s done.
I’ve realized a lot since she came home for Christmas, since she wanted to hang out like we were together and then disappear like it never happened, like I could move on from that.
I learned to spot the difference between love and doing what she said and trying to move on. I learned how to get the girl, what you’ll do if you really love her, and it isn’t letting her go.
