“I know, Buddy. Soon.”

I tapped out a text to Amber telling her that her stunt had gotten the dog hurt. She didn't respond, and honestly, I didn’t expect her to. If it wasn’t for my son, I would hate the woman.

The bell above the door sounded, and I looked over to see Ariel walking in.

“Hey, how is she?”

“I don’t know yet. The car got her good on her back leg.” I dragged my hands over my face irritated that there was nothing I could do. “It looked pretty bad.”

“She’ll be ok.”

“I hope you’re right. Kas loves the hell out of that dog. If she doesn’t make it…”

“Hey, don’t talk like that. She’s going to make it.”

I nodded silently and sat back in the chair. “I hope so.”

“Your ex was still at the garage when I got there.”

I groaned. Fucking Amber. “What was she doing?”

“Besides being a bitch, I guess waiting for you to come back. She did leave this for you though, before she got on the back of a bike with a sketchy looking biker. The man seriously gave me the creeps. There was a patch on his back that said Wicked Reapers MC.” Ariel handed me Simon’s duffle bag with his clothes and favorite toys. “I don’t really see you two together, and I’m not sure what she’s into, but that guy looked like bad news.”

I huffed sarcastically, “She was a drunken one-night stand that lasted three years too long. The only good that came from that relationship was Simon, and thanks. I’ll try to find out what’s going on with her and the biker.”

“He’s cute, looks like you.” She said watching as Simon moved on to from the cat to the small kid activity table they had.

“Yeah. You should see pictures of me at that age. He could be my twin.”

The back door opened and my stomach clenched when I saw Kas coming out. She had blood on her shirt and unshed tears in her eyes. My heart sank, but she let out a small smile. “She’ll recover. It will take a bit, but she will be back to her old self in no time.”

I stood up and pulled her into my arms, hugging her tightly against me. “I’m so sorry.” I whispered in her ear.

“It’s not your fault.”

It wasn’t, but it was my ex’s and that made me feel responsible for it. When Kas went to pay the vet, I put my card out and told him to charge it to me. She tried to object, but I refused to let her take care of it. It was my ex that caused Hemi to get hurt in the first place.

“I’m going to keep her over the weekend. You can come pick her up Monday morning or afternoon. Whatever’s best for you.” The vet swiped my card, his glances kept straying over to Ariel who was over talking to my son.

“Thanks Drew.” Kas gave the man a hug, and I’d be lying if I didn’t say it annoyed me. I didn’t like seeing her in another man’s arms. The only thing that helped me stay calm was the fact that he looked more interested in the blonde who was laughing with my kid than in Kassandra.

“Y’all have a good night. I’ll take good care of Hemi. I promise.”

“Thanks.” We said again and gathered our stuff. Kas hugged Ariel and thanked her for closing up the shop quickly and for coming to check on Hemi.

I grabbed Simon’s duffle and lifted him into my arms. “You ready to get some food, Little Buddy.”

“Yay!”

Kas followed me out to my truck quietly. She looked drained, and I couldn’t blame her. It was time to get cleaned up, eat, and sleep.

Chapter 6

Kas

Maybe it was everything that happened, or maybe it was because I’d been burning on fumes for far too long. Whatever the case, I fell asleep in Creed’s truck. It wasn’t until the door slammed that I startled awake to see we were parked in front of a nice two story craftsman style home in an unfamiliar neighborhood.

I pushed open the door, knowing this was Creed’s house. It was very domestic looking for a guy that was covered in tattoos and a little rough around the edges. Totally not what I expected. This place looked moreLeave it to Beaverthan single, macho, mechanic.
