I managed to drop another man hauling explosives before he got close to the fence. Kaige was yelling something I couldn’t even make out and shooting wildly. The Storm’s people weren’t pulling back any farther, but they hadn’t made any progress pushingusback either. We were holding them off, by however small a margin.
All of a sudden, a strange movement caught my attention from the corner of my eye. My head jerked around in time to see a bunch of the Noble men who’d been fighting with us hurrying to the cars farthest from the fight.
“Where the fuck are you going?” Wylder yelled after them, his eyes furious. “You’re needed here!”
Gideon jabbed at his tablet where he’d crouched next to the car, his gun beside him. “I can’t see anything that could explain it.”
The men didn’t answer Wylder, didn’t even look back. They dove into the cars, and five vehicles peeled away from the fray, leaving us that much more outnumbered. A chill washed through me. What the hell was going on? Why would they justleave?
I didn’t have time to wonder for very long. Xavier let out a triumphant roar, and the Storm’s men pressed in on us. I glanced at Wylder and saw the same flash of panic in his eyes that I was feeling.
We were absolutely fucked.
